I remember when I first read this thread when Atlas was growing up you talked about being able to tell if a rooster was mean or not by his eyes. Have you seen that with Hector or Apollo? Or any of Atlas's children?
I'm not sure Hector is old enough yet for "the look" I was talking about, but so
far, I don't see any indication of the hardness I've seen in other males who've turned on me. I'll let you know when his hormones kick in.
Apollo is very easygoing, though it's hard to see that through the skittish "don't touch me, omg, you're going to touch me!" stuff he's learned from his experiences in Atlas's group. He's very sweet, just doesn't want to be touched, but when I do stroke him on the roost, he just lowers his head and closes his eyes and endures it until I quit. He has a very soft eye, a good boy.
None of Atlas's sons has turned on me, not one, no "hard eyes" in that entire lot. His older daughters have had different experiences, being raised by broodies, so Lizzie doesn't like being touched but she doesn't bite unless I reach for her when she's on the nest. Tessa is, well, Tessa. I can pick her up more now, trying to get her used to being handled again, but her personality has changed since the three kids moved into her group. Now, Apollo and the two pullets sleep elsewhere, but they free range with Atlas and the older hens. Again, Apollo is chased and harassed by Tessa and Dru, if he gets too close to her. Overall, Atlas's progeny is very sweet. Athena and Zara are super sweet girls.
