Before you get all the edging stones in, you might want to consider a ramp that extends quite a bit further out than the steps. That would provide a gentle incline, instead of such a rapid, steep incline. It would be a lot easier to manage than the steps, and even allow for wheelchair use in the future, if needed.

Not sure where you mean, Cheryl. The deck, unfortunately, is too high for a wheelchair ramp unless it is super long and to have the proper rise it would have to have landings and wrap around on itself. It would require so many steps to walk up it, it would not be much easier than the steps. I researched that awhile back. Was thinking an electric lift up to the deck would be the best thing, though those are quite expensive, $4-5K.

Well, I didn't know how high up your deck is. From the little bit you can see of the steps in the pic, it doesn't look too high up, that's why the suggestion. Well, shucks. Nevermind. Oh, yeah, there are 10 steps to the deck, over 5' off the ground at the lowest point. Trust me, I thought and thought about how I could have a ramp built, but it would be so long and winding to get the appropriate rise, not the best thing to do. Plus, to maintain all those feet of extra ramp, not feasible in our case.

Good grief! I had no idea it was that high up. I'd have rigged a truck winch, and a platform a long time ago, at least to haul groceries, and stuff up that high. Whew! No wonder you're so healthy. People pay big money at the gyms to use "stair climbers" to stay fit, and you have the real deal.

We are up and down those steps 50 times a day some days, sometimes more, me more than my husband, unless it's raining and we can't go outside much. But on days when his knee is screaming or his back is really bad, they might as well be 100 steps up.

Progress! Just have 3 creeping jenny plants, which spread to about a foot each. That may be all I get done in each bed this season.

Yes, at this point in life, you may want to either add a stair lift, or even talk to a realtor, and see what you could get for your place, and what might be available that would be more suitable to your needs.

When I think of moving residence, I get very tired suddenly, LOL. My mortgage company says that we have about $150K equity in the house and if I don't want another payment, Id have to be able to get that plus what we owe, another $40K, for this mini-farm. I really want no mortgage for once in my life, if at all possible. But, with all the requirements for another place, elevation above 1600 ft, no steps, acreage & privacy, no restrictions, etc, etc, might be difficult. I can't do a fixer upper at this stage, it's just not in me anymore.

Like I said, contact a good realtor, and discuss it. There may be a place that has the elevation you want, no steps, on 3 acres, with decent privacy, and no restrictions, that will be financially do-able. A good realtor knows the housing market better than the mortgage companies, so I would at least talk to one.
