The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Oh, joy, the FF crows is at it again. I deleted this comment because of her snarkiness, then found she'd posted yet another so I did answer that one. Here is the one I deleted:

Screen name "floot" (wow, made up on the spot, much?)
Amazing how this lady can assess what others do. What chickens can do and create 'situations', that chickens 'feel'. OMG.. a friend called and said her ENTIRE crop of chickens based on one person's experience. Listen to this lady and never feed your chickens anything except dry grain. This lady should also send warnings to the home of chickens which are the drylands and jungles of SE asia. They eat a lot of fermented and sprouted grains, they have done it for millenia.

I have no idea what she/he is talking about, that chickens "feel". I'm not sure I said anything about that in regard to feed. And her wording is clunky so not sure the point in the middle. It's like some words are missing. Birds in some jungle in Asia eating a few fermented berries here and there is not the same as someone throwing some putrid mess down for their birds every day and they have no choice in what they eat. They will eat rather than starve if that's all they have.

And then, this one:

floot
Lady, I have had chickens for most of my life over the past 50 years... and fermenting grains was my way of turning plain seed into something close to 20% protein... and they laid eggs, and I also used Rocket, or arugula to promote eggs..

Arugula to promote eggs? WTH? Seriously? Why? Because it's peppery-tasting? It's LETTUCE. Any greens are good for chickens, but to specifically promote eggs? Oh, that is so telling about where she's coming from. I answered that one. I told her to ignore lab reports. To ignore dying birds and not just the one person's I told about but others have lost birds to this slop, too. They hesitate to say anything because the FF cult is there with bats and clubs to attack. But, I don't need to up protein. I feed 22% protein with animal protein in the feed. She's another loon and a snarky one at that. That I don't care if she feeds her chickens styrofoam, but she will not convince me that this is natural for an animal with a crop, that she could slop her chickens like my granddaddy slopped the hogs. She didn't need to comment. There are plenty in the cult, but not many on my side that will speak out. They don't like having their heads bashed in.

Years having chickens does not mean you know diddly. My dad was an old farmer who was full of old farmers' tales.

@sue25 Buddy is a nice hatchery type BR boy. To me, temperament is paramount, even in show quality BRs, so hopefully, he's a nice guy. His barring is better than most hatchery BRs. What you look for there are bars straight across the feather, not chevron-shaped (V-shaped) to tell you what I'm looking for when I say that. His is somewhat chevron in places, but it's fairly evenly spaced on Buddy, which gives him a balanced look. Some hatchery BRs are just awful in that regard.
In rehoming/selling him, if you decide to do that, he would be more for a backyard flock, not a breeding flock, due to his very "meaty" comb, which is his main flaw that I can see from the photos, which is why I mention temperament. To me, that is such an important thing in a backyard flock rooster, that you don't have to watch your back to work around him in the pen. Pretty is as pretty does. A rooster who is absolute perfection in looks is a cull if he is mean as a snake. If he's sweet, why not keep him and let him take care of your other hens? I had a BR rooster over a bunch of hens of various breeds in my earlier years and he was wonderful.
Nice ISA Brown hen.
Thanks for your info I think I will just keep him he is a gentle giant. Buddy is also a very good roo when it comes to hen protection as well.

@sue25 sounds like a plan! I love a gentle rooster. Maybe some day, you'll be able to get some BR girls for him, but in the meantime, if he's a good boy, I think it's great to keep him. My first rooster was a BR and he had BR, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red and Silver Laced Wyandotte hens. He didn't care and neither did they, he was such a gentleman.

It's snowing! It won't stick, but it's our coldest high today so far, only 40* predicted, and a low in the mid-20's. Yesterday, it poured a cold rain all day. Today, the lady who is buying all the Brahma chicks plus two of the older boys is coming from SC to get them. They're going to live where the nights are not as chilly as they are here, for sure!

Mind you, I don't like snow. I have lived in Utah twice, and Ohio for almost 12 years, and Colorado before all that and I'm over snow. Thankfully, we don't usually have that much here.

ETA: Lisa, we're supposed to be colder overnight than you are in Wisconsin! Our low is 25*or 26*, depending on which program you are using. The Brahma chicks are going to where it will be about 10* warmer overnight tonight.
You are colder than us. We have been dropping below freezing at night. I of course love it. Brisk morning are wonderful. I have been busy with my baby bunnies, and gardens, and everything in general to get ready for winter.

It will get warmer next week again, into the 40's. It will feel hot since I'm now used to cooler temperatures.

I cannot get over the size of those Brahma boys and those big feet feathers. They are quite spectacular.

I'm fine with cold, but not wet plus cold. Brrrr! The lady should be turning into my driveway any minute now. She's going to love these boys. They are so super sweet. I wish you could have some of these, Lisa. They would do pretty well in your climate.

Nicole just left with all six youngsters, plus the dark blue and the largest partridge 11 week old males. So, I have the lighter blue male plus the other partridge male left. MaryJo better decide she's a BR or she'll find herself all alone..

As far as the YouTube snark, when you start off answering someone with "Lady,..." you've already rubbed me the wrong way. That shows your attitude. If someone is respectful, I may disagree but I can be nice. When you start out on the attack, I may or may not use my tact.

Well, MaryJo was found once again on the top plate of the pen wall at roost time. DH put her in the group with Georgie, but did not remove mean Zara from there. So, I hope Miss MaryJo will be okay tonight. I don't hear fighting on the baby monitor in the barn so maybe they're all too cold to think of "un-huddling" to go after MaryJo. That means the two Brahma cockerels are missing their two brothers tonight. It's just them in the pen by themselves. I may let them spend the day in the pen attached to the other little coop so they can be outside if they want and put them back in the barn for the night. Supposed to be in the high 50's tomorrow, unlike today when it never made it past 35* in spite of the forecasted 40*.

Pretty brisk here too. Had 30 round bales of hay delivered and they had to be unloaded from the trailer, I also put two of the boats up, removed a raised bed garden, and did other assorted oh-oh-winter-is-coming stuff.

Cyn, don't feed the trolls, otherwise you can never get rid of them :D

Yeah, I know. If she comes back, I'll just delete her sorry behind. I guess I hate to delete too much or I'll be accused of only accepting replies that go my way. But, hey, it is my channel and my rules. I really don't like rude snarky people.
