The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I've had a few that for some unexplained reason would hit the oyster shell hard for awhile, then after several months, would taper back down. I have no idea why. Not all of them have done this, just a few. Yes, you go through quite a bit of oyster shell during that time.

Dh, and my grandson celebrate their birthdays this month. They decided they wanted to go to the Monster Truck Rally. It was last night. They went, and had a ball. Apparently they ate their way from one end to the other. Grandson got a couple monster truck toy trucks for himself, and one for each of his sisters. They had pit passes, so they got to get up close, and personal to each of the trucks before the rally.

Not to be left out of having something special to do, the girls put in for a Princess Tea Party. They donned their princess dresses. I got out the good china, teapots, teapot warmers, and set a lovely table. We had scones with Devonshire cream, and mini blueberry muffins to start, then Butternut squash soup, followed by Creamy Shrimp stuffed Chicken Breasts, along with Quiche Lorraine, and mini Red Velvet cupcakes for dessert. I served mixed berry, and chocolate coconut teas. The girls tried so hard to act "grown up", and be dainty, and proper. It was so cute. The food was great, and we had a lovely time.

Serving high tea, I need to see about getting some more pieces to my china set, or get a new set. When all my things were in storage, one of the managers they had was stealing from the storage units. He was fired for it. I didn't realize it at the time, but when we finally emptied my storage unit, discovered he stole quite a bit from me. He stole 2 beautiful sets of china that had belonged to my grandmother. 1 of them was a setting for 8 people, with serving platters, and large serving bowls. The other was a setting for 12. What I have now is a setting for 4, and when I got it, a couple of the pieces were badly chipped. I couldn't afford anything better at the time.

Do they get grit too?

No need. There is grit galore in their pen, all over the place. Remember, I live on a mountain. Rocks and gravel are everywhere. I have never seen a hen chow down on calcium like Thea does. And you'd think that there would be those calcium deposits on her egg shells, but nope, smooth as silk and hard as iron.

Cheryl, I hate being stolen from that way. Sorry you lost your grandmother's china. I have no china. If there ever was any, my Aunt Reba grabbed it all out of my grandmother's house when she died and my grandfather was left. She took a lot of stuff off the farm for her four sons and their families out from under my dad. But, whatever...folks have to live with themselves. I guess they do. Maybe they just have no conscience at all.

My cold has moved to Stage 2, up in my head and nose more. I am on the upswing, but this weather isn't helping. I feel a tad worse today, probably because of that weather front. Yesterday was in the mid-40's, sunny and breezy. Today is in the upper 30's and pouring rain, going into the 20's tonight with ice warnings. I hope we don't lose power. I moved Maretta and her six chicks to the little coop, which stays warmer than the barn, being back-end to the afternoon sun and having up high vents, no openings down low at all if the pop door is shut. They get more sun, too, stationary double-paned windows on the east and south, so it's brighter in there as well for the most part.

I have my grandmother's lovely Fairy Dell from Spode, not that I ever use it, but she wanted my to have it and it is a sweet reminder of her. Her Mom took her to Sarnia, Ontario to buy the original set as a wedding gift. I bought an antique cabinet to put it in, so it is housed safely.
How horrible to have someone steal from you that way.

This morning, I see that poor Panda is not doing all that well. She has a very pronounced limp from an arthritic joint. I mean, she is 10 years old now, after all, but she's the only one I ever got out of my late Zane before he was too handicapped to mate. And she's Gypsy's half sister, just a couple months younger. She has been hunched up and barely able to support her weight, off her feed the past week or so. She will still rally her resources and pound Tiny when Tiny attacks DH, bless her heart. She is the sweetest girl, hasn't laid her little light olive green golf ball-size eggs in years.

I'll so miss Panda when she's gone. She, Gypsy and their other half sister, Riley, were just wonderful hens. Too bad Riley passed away too young, such a beautiful blue barred EE girl. Out of 33 hens, half of them are 7 years old to 11 years old. This entire barn is like an Old Hens' Retirement Home & Hospice.

I don't feel so hot myself. I think I need to go back to bed for awhile. Stupid weather is not helping at all.

You need to rest more. It is not lazy to lay around when you are sick :rant

I know. I just am never sick. This is highly unusual. I have to be up and at 'em to do stuff, but today, not so much. DH had to go to Home Depot to get a ridiculously expensive drain assembly for the bathroom sink and install it without me, see to the barn for the midday check (I was out this a.m. doing the usual chores with him) and I guess I'll just spend most of the day in bed reading or dozing. Even the cat is on the bed with me, something he rarely does. He's a daddy's boy, but maybe he realizes I don't feel well.
