The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I love my daughter. She helped me grow up and take responsibility. She has three weeks wonderful kids. I believe god gives us what we need.

I also prefer animals over people. I breed and show dogs. Chickens were for helping with their raw diet.. they get an egg every other day. The chickens are not my pets. I like them but I am not close to them like my dogs.

It was a big surprise to us, the intelligence and affection of chickens. Sure, some are smarter than others. I definitely am as attached to some of mine as much as any dog I've ever had. Gypsy is my heart, that girl. I will be inconsolable when I lose her and I will soon, her going on 11 years old. And I call my Zane the chicken love of my life. It's crazy how much we loved that rooster and so did Gypsy. Yeah, animals over people. At least, they never have ulterior motives. They are pretty much "what you see is what you get".

No kids here, just my dogs, and critters. I never had a choice in the matter. I like my dogs. :)

Trust me, Lisa, having kids is not always such a blessing. I hate how it's romanticized with all the motherhood memes on Facebook and other places. I know we all want what we can't have, though, and I'm sorry you weren't able to have children if you wanted them. I'd rather have choices, too. I didn't want kids when we got married, but I chose to have my two sons. I loved them, was a stay at home mom until they hit late high school age, and I raised them in a home where they were taken care of, taught right from wrong and sacrificed for, but I told my husband one day, "See? I told you! It was just as awful as I said it would be!" jokingly. We are alone up here, even with two sons. No one can depend on their kids hanging around and being in their lives later. But, I did my time, got them both through college and if they screw up their lives, they need not think I'm going to bail them out (and trust me, they know better). At least, you don't have to send chickens and dogs to college!

Yesterday our puppy got into the little coop the 2 leghorn chicks were in. Stupid cheap prefab coop, she jumped on the top hardware cloth and it fell in. My 13 year old found her in there and came in screaming. The chicks were still breathing when we got out there, but unfortunately neither one made it. My kids were crushed, especially the one that found them. I’m just glad she hadn’t gotten in the big coop like I was afraid had happened when he ran in screaming. But that coop is much more secure luckily.
