The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Oh, that's great news about his bonus too. I still think he should "disappear" the dogs just before she leaves. They can magically re-appear right after she's on British soil.

I sent that suggestion to him so it's in his court now.

Oh, I love this short video re: Joel Salatin. I love that he has a large portion of the hens in Barred Rocks. I always said that my hatchery BR hens laid as many eggs as the RIRs ever did.

I've known several folks that have experienced the same, incorrect assumptions after necropsy. Even Joel Salatin, in one of his books, had lab results come back Mareks which he considered (to quote him) ludicrous.

Here is an excerpt from that chapter. See page 208 & 209.

Oh and I have all of Adele Davis books. I used them as reference for dog breeding.

Me, too! Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit and Let's Have Healthy Children. Love them! I raised my sons on her baby formula made with raw whole cow's milk--used to be you could get that delivered to your door in a glass jar by the gallon (that was in Utah). Mine never had commercial formulas, not once.

Since I love the look of the barred rock , I think I will just order hatchery ones since I really can’t sell or breed for show. What hatchery would you suggest?

Honestly, I don't really know. I've had them from Ideal and I'd say skip that place. Both died of reproductive malfunctions. Lexie was very small and cockerel colored. Ivy was larger, but very, very dark. I can say that both were very sweet hens, though, as all BRs should be. If you don't care about looks and want to take a chance, I guess most hatcheries would do. I will never buy from Ideal again, even if I decided to take another chance on hatchery birds.

Then again, my McMurray daughters, were very long lived and decent size, plus excellent layers. Amanda, who is going on 12 years old and still laying, was out of the McMurray flock of a friend. Becca, her sister, lived to almost 10 years old. I would say of the large hatcheries, McMurray is much better than Ideal for BRs. That's my experience, for whatever it's worth.

Ok, thank you. I admire you went through the work to make homemade formula from raw milk. We make raw food for our dogs everyday. Main reason we got chickens. The eggs.

I have only gotten chicks from mcmurrays and sandhill. I won’t go back to sandhill. Way too frustrating but I understand why. I just can’t deal with not knowing when they will be shipped. I was really happy with my ornamental layers from mcmurrays. Still have most of the birds. You do t know what you are getting but all female. My EE from them are a beautiful partridge color.
I am not getting new chicks til prob next year. I need to lower my numbers. I must have at least 20 more Roos to dispatch.

I went to a local TSC today and they had 3 bins of chicks - unusual for them at this time of year. Whoops...2 bins of chick and 2 of ducklings.

EVERY WATERER WAS BONE DRY. The duck food was empty. The chick food almost empty.

I asked someone to fill them and said I'd do it if they told me where the water is. The guy got some but didn't clean the waterers which had shavings in them and somewhat dirty.

I stayed and watched...
The 2 bins of chicks gathered around their water and drank - for more than 5 minutes. And after that, some of them were still drinking.

After that they were off to the food. Those ducklings were going to finish the feed within 10 minutes if I estimate correctly. Then what?

I'm chalking it up to weekend workers as I've never seen that in this or the other local TSC. But seriously, I think they probably would have stared dying if they hadn't gotten water within the half hour.

:barnie:rant Those ducklings will be dying if they don't have water when they chow down. Idiots.

If I'd had the capacity, I'd have purchased them all and then listed them for sale online somewhere until they went to good homes.

But this is not the best time of year for newly hatched chicks with winter coming in soon...especially for new chicken owners. So it would have to be folks that already have good housing and know what they're doing.
