The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I'm dealing with integrating Maddie and Jane into adult groups now. They get picked on mercilessly. It's just the way it is. If they had a brother with them, he'd be picked on as well. They're 19 weeks old, babies, about the age of the Brahma kids she has, so she just needs to quit expecting him to act like an adult until he's ready. And he hasn't crowed, either, which also is not unusual for a slow-maturing breed. The original Rex didn't crow until around 25 weeks old. I think I've talked her down, into giving him time to grow into his long legs and start looking at his sister as more than a fellow victim of the older birds.

My son's professor was so impressed with his dissertation research, she asked that he submit an article about it. If you are of a mind to read it, here is his article. He's in Korea awaiting the final whatever for his master's degree graduation so he can try to get a position at the university there. He lived there for years and apparently likes the pay he can earn, though it's really pricey to live in Korea.

I have been looking for a new mattress, hoping I didn't have to spend an arm and a leg, but not wanting to get a discount mattress again. Went back to the place where we usually end up finding things we like, like the couch I got for Tom not long ago, and all the appliances we bought, plus the loveseat, after the house fire. Found a tall 5 drawer chest to replace our triple dresser with mirror, plus a matching nightstand and a mattress set. I'm going with memory foam this time, like so many seem to love. Tom loved the feel of it on his back and we got a great deal on it, being the floor model-it was already on sale down from $1200 to $999, then the usual guy we deal with there took another $200 off that, as well as $200 of the price of the other stuff. They're bringing it tomorrow.

I was thinking about selling that other mattress set if someone needed one really cheap ir just letting them take it away, but Tom suggested putting that queen bed in the basement. We hope one day to truly finish it off into a studio type apartment if we stay here. It should be fine for a guest for a few nights here and there. Eventually, I'll replace the headboard/footboard to more go with the new stuff. And, my quilt room will gain a lot of wall space, too!

The triple dresser and night stand were in excellent condition because they are solid oak, cost a lot of $$ at the time we got them, but that dresser is just humongous for the space we have. It's this one. I'm going to sell the matching set for $200 OBO. And I've made two quilt sales since yesterday, too, so that helps with the cost of the new furniture.

@speckledhen

I'd like to see a photo of that tall 5-drawer chest. I need to purchase one of those also and take out a dresser that I guess would be quadruple - longer than the one you have. It's a quality piece of furniture but just too large for the tiny bedrooms in this 1940's house.

That dresser is 65" long so definitely, the chest will take up far less space with 5 big drawers and less than 43" wide. Here are the chest and nightstand. Probably won't last nearly as long as the other furniture did, but that's the way it goes.

The style is rustic, but not too cabin-y, IMO. I got only one nightstand, but if I want, I could get a second one. The bedroom it's in is so darn tiny, not much room. Tom's using a 2 drawer file cabinet for his side. The cat will sure like that area underneath, LOL.
The description of it:
Load up on character. Scale back on fuss. As the Sommerford 5-drawer chest proves to perfection—less is more. Crafted of reclaimed pine, its ultra clean-lined, chunky profile showcases long butcher-block planking rich with tonal variation, nicks, notches, nail holes and a whole lot of raw beauty. The drawers offer ample room for a wardrobe. Metal leg brackets add a modern touch for a unique look.

  • Silver/bronze-tone hardware
  • Made with reclaimed pine wood
  • Metal leg brackets
  • 5 smooth-operating drawers with dovetail construction
  • Light grayish brown finish
I think it looks like a cross between cabin and cottage style.

Thanks.

The bedroom you describe sounds like the ones we have here. Very small. The furniture my mom got after they had a fire was huge, full sized furniture and very good quality. Bed has to be pushed up almost against the wall on one side to accommodate it. I have to get rid of it since it's such good quality.
