The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

getaclue, my blue cabinets got quite the workout yesterday. DH made tiny meatballs for Wedding soup, and I chopped up about 9 different vegetables to put in. I made 3 quarts of soup, which is a ton of soup, some to freeze, some to leave and some for my DD's family of 5. It came out super!!! In the interim I re organized my kitchen cabinets to incorporate my "private" cooking ware. So I had fun!!!
I love wedding soup.

You're a real peach, Karen. I'm happy you're posting on the thread again, my friend. Always love to see my longtime BYC friends are still around! 💕

Whether I'm on BYC or not I think I think of you everyday. Or I hear your voice guiding me on what to do. I need to go back and watch your videos.

Does anyone other than me obsess over every detail packing for a short trip? What fits, what to take, if all my fluids can fit in a one quart bag , Can't they at least make it 2-one quart bags?
I've had to deal with packing everything into a 14 x 18 x 8 carry on. It did get easy after packing t-shirts and jeans. I had plenty room left for my toiletries, my bigger better camera, my tablet, a book. some crosswords, and a cd player with ear phone plugs and 4 cd's, 3 I haven't heard yet. But all of this packed together obsessively. I've never had a 4 hour trip since my military family had to live in different countries. So I want to bring plenty of stuff to keep me busy , aside from a nap,LOL ,

CRITICAL INFORMATION and really alarming. Many states, including North Carolina, have stopped places from selling chicks. They can sell what they have, but not restock. That means more than ever I'll be hatching my own.

You are too sweet, Karen. I just have some sad experience with a lot of stuff, thanks to my early hatchery hens and others later who suffered from random weirdness. Seemed prudent to share that stuff, in case others encounter the same stuff.

I had a sad for me thing happen. A baby squirrel was in with my silkie hen. She was pecking him, as I look back on it maybe she thought it was a chick that she wanted to move. The first day I just moved him outside. So the next day I moved him 100 ft. away in some weeds. Well I noticed he was back but he was dead. When I picked him up he was still soft.

So I am pretty sure that he lost his mom and to learn how to survive. So I think he thought about the silkie as a substitute mom. I don't know what the silkie thought of junior. She had just come off sitting on a regular egg. It just makes me sad.

Rehabbing baby squirrels is a VERY time consuming ordeal. I've used a small plastic reptile cage, placed over a heating pad that was lifted up slightly with small strips of wood. Like chickens, they can't regulate their temp until older. In the meantime, they must be bottle fed OFTEN for the first week (about every half hour), then hourly the second, and third weeks. You can use canned cat formula, but I have an orphan milk recipe that I like better. After each feeding, you must use a cloth, and gently rub their genital/anal regions for a minute, to stimulate them to urinate, and poop. The first couple weeks are exhausting, but worth the effort in most cases.

We have way too many squirrels around here as it is. They ate all the blossoms off my pear tree this year as they were beginning to bud. I watched two of them early every morning run up and down and snip every one off of the branches. Those rodents are overrunning the place at the moment. My cat has issues with his eyes now and he doesn't put as much effort into catching them as he once did. He has a cataract on one eye, actually, has to have drops in his eyes every day for awhile to relieve any pressure. The other one is very red inside so he can't keep up with their numbers now.
