The Expecting Chick Momma Thread

Thank you all for sharing your new chick pics and your excitement & anticipation. This thread has helped me feel a little more normal about my excitement! My wife & I will become first-time "Chick Mommas" this afternoon when we pick them up from our local feed store. Expecting one of each: Jersey Giant, Orpington, Plymouth Rock, Australorp, Wellsummer, Wyandotte, and two Silkies (too goofy-looking to resist). I think I slept about 3 hours last night!

Here's pics of the brooder we made:

Bottom = 22" x 60" piece of OSB & sheet of cardboard on top. We will add shavings today & paper towels for a few days.
Sides are cardboard & duct tape.
Screwed a short section of 4x4 to the floor, and screwed a 3"x1/4" scrap to the 4x4 to support the heat lamp.
Top is 1/2" hardware cloth stapled to 1" square wood (ripped from old 2x4's)

Hope I can resist fawning over the chicks long enough to design & build the coop!

Thanks again to all for sharing - ENJOY!

Dave & Cherrie

@mimi14 : mine also is estimated Wednesday, but I'm 13 hours ish in Illinois. I'm hoping they manage to get here tomorrow afternoon

Let me know if you do get yours, PO shows that they haven't even left OH yet?

Mine are coming from Missouri (cackle) I called our po and they don't have more info than I do. Either mine JUST left Springfield, mo or they just updated it now and they are on their way. Either way they spent at least 6 hours sitting at the Springfield, mo po

i am anxiously awaiting our local feed stores arrival of chicks. i am hoping they get all of the breeds that i am wanting, black australorp, delaware, speckled sussex and bared rock. if not i can get them from Meyer Hatchery or My Pet Chicken but they all are so spread out as to when they are available. so everyone cross your fingers for me...this is my first time having chicks and i am extremely excited. we have the brooder all ready for them.

Really excited for our chicks 2 EE's and 15 leann adopt me bargain chicks.

My chicks ship from Ideal tomorrow, but I'm really worried because it's gotten really cold... like 19 degrees at night. When I ordered them in January it was 45 degrees at night, so go figure...

So typical.

I'm so nervous. I hope they do okay in the cold. I intentionally chose a March 1 delivery since I thought it would be warmer. Guess I would've been better off getting them in January!

Good luck! This is our first time owning chicks, we've had chickens before when I was a young teen. We just got 2 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Barred Rocks, plus one Mystery chick that no one knows what she is lol. Our RiR's weren't avaible til almost a week after the BR's, so there is a size difference but they're all doing good in the brooder together. We're just planning on keeping the older chicks in an extra week or so til the RIR's catch up

Same here, I called our PO asking about that and they said they should have been here and to call the hatchery (I am 4hrs from Mansfield, OH directly west). Hatchery could not tell me much which I didn't think they could they just said that they were not due until tomorrow so to call if they don't come in tomorrow. I guess they are just sitting there, because she said it would show on tracking if next when they arrived and were scanned in at the next stop. Little worried! Hope you get yours home in good condition. This is my first time!
