The first has pipped!!

Unfortunately, my bloody pips never hatched out ( I can only assume it was because they were simply too weak to hatch after losing a portion of their blood supply ). They did the same thing you described - pipped right through their veins.

I hope you have better luck with yours. I would think it might have something to do with *which* vein it pipped through, but I don't know for sure.

Please let us know how they fare. :)
mine survived but it was weak

Checked today, took off the lil piece of bandaid I had over the opening and there was no more blood, looks like it was only a small vessel, scarily enough there's a very BIG vein right below the pip so that probably would have did the chick in if it hit that one...still peeping and lively tonight! Looks like yellow and black. Probably gonna hatch at like 3 am like it's sibling LOL!!

Also,
the first peep has really bonded with me, he nuzzles my hand and then burrows into the sleeve of my jacket and just sits in there for hours! Got an updated POOFY
Actually he's in my sleeve right now hahah
(I think it's a she tho?? according to the feather sex method but I dunno if that applies to EE's)

Some pics of his sleeve-burrowing antics! He's normally way back by my elbow but occasionally pops out to see what's going on

62% is waaay to much for day 1 eggs, the air cell needs to grow so they have enough oxygen till they hatch.

Second one is out and about! Very VERY noisy!! Black with yellow marks over it's eyes pretty cool looking, hope this one's alright because of the vein being pipped earlier. I'm gonna try to get it to drink as soon as she dries off just in case.
Look at this scruffy little lump! Funny how much smaller they look without all the puff.

I need to learn about pipping. What happened to the chicks vein?
Well when he internally pipped thru to the air cell (this is before the external pip / when you can see cracks) he hit a medium sized vein..luckly it wasn't the biggest and didn't bleed out. Before they hatch they absorb all the blood from vessels around the egg. I noticed this one seems a bit weaker and smaller, the air cell was larger than it should have been so it was either that or him pipping the vein that made him a bit weak. Still alive right now and puffy! Going to get some updated pix of the two today...also a third egg has started peeping!
