The FLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are so many variables--what works in one place may not work well in another. Flies need wet to hatch, and heat makes them hatch faster. Breezes versus still air can also make a difference. What the birds are fed makes a difference in their manure--amount, how wet/dry it is, how smelly it is, and that makes a difference in the level to which it atttracts flies and other pests.

I use Quickstrike fly bait trap things. They are a little plastic board with poison on it. Put it outside the coop so the chickens can't eat the dead flies. Keep it in the shade, because the sun will melt the poison right off of the plastic. I put them right on the ground. Got them at TSC and they really work. No stink and no sticky stuff and easy to keep out of the chicken's reach.

I also keep a good stock of Golden Marlin poison granules, but they are harder to use and harder to keep away from the chickens. If I shoot a coon outside the coop I put it where the blood leaks out so the flies that are attracted get poisoned, stuff like that. They don't have a noticeable odor outdoors, but carrying around the 5lb can of it in your truck smells kinda like something died or rotted in there in the past. It's not strong, but you notice it in the enclosed area.

Using DE or limestone has helped me some, but in the summer when the chickens drink a lot to keep cool it results in really wet poops that flies just looooooove!

I hang vanilla air fresheners and it works like a dream...

How often do you have to replace them? Also how many per square foot of space about? Do they work if you have lots of ventilation? JC...

I use the water filled fly traps and strips,,,they work ok for me.
Whatever works for one might not work for another.
Otherwise, google.

Yep. I get a three-pak at the service station. Auto parts stores have them too. I hung two on my brooder (the outside), and one in my truck last Saturday. So far, so good. I took the wrapper completely off for full effect, but next time may leave some of the plastic on to make them last longer. I guess it depends on how bad the flies are.

Actually, here's the setup...
