So last night, I went out after dark to lock everyone in. The 2 polish, and 2 silkies happily went to the dog box for the night. Clover... not so much... she was freaking out. Bawk bawk bawk BAWK... meanwhile on the other side of the fence, miss Mary is bawk bawk bawking too. So I guess Mary and Clover don't like to be separated, they are roost mates. Clover can just stay in the main run, with Mary. Everyone is just happy go lucky now.

I observed a long time ago that my flock breaks down into pairs. I have endeavored ever since to keep an even number of hens in my flock. It is not surprising to me at all that if you split a pairing somehow they would be frantic to get back together. I'm glad you recognized this and let them be with each other.

Well if you think about it. Mary and Clover came home together as day old chicks, and the 2 silkies come home together the same. When they free range, they group out like that also. Toodles and Nessy are getting closer to laying. So they joined up with Falkor, and his gang.

Let me rephrase that question! Have you butchered any of the NN cross, to see how they compare to a regular say Cornish cross? Meat wise? I want to do meat birds maybe in the spring. I want to get a deep freezer first.

No, I have not butchered any NNCx. I'm trying to get a flock and breed them and sell eggs ang chicks from them. But so far I only got 2 girls from her and 3 boys. The NNCx is way smaller than her mom, dad, big brother, and her little brothers and sister are almost bigger than her. We did butcher one of my Cornish x hens after my brother accidentally killed her. Her meat was very tough(she was a year old). I can tell you the meat hybrid chicks w/out NN, have a better body structure, are taller, and are heave for a big bird. I'll have to waigh my big boy. Maybe his mom too. That will be fun.

While I'm here! The 2 silkie and 2 polish, have settled in great. Everyone seems content and happy. My plan is to convert my dog box run, into a mini coop for winter. As long as this old piece of corrugated clear plastic doesn't explode. Im going to do one side with it, to allow light in. Then board up the other side. Ill leave a bit of a gap at the top for ventilation. I think it should be sufficient for the silkie and polish crew! I'll update you when I get that far! also the silkie is sitting on a single egg. She was brooding hay, so I gave in and gave her 3 eggs. Only one egg was fertile, no idea who's it is. Maybe bantam egg? I dont know. It was on my table with the rest of the eggs lol another couple weeks we will find out
