The Fricken Chicken story!

Pics
Ok... so....

Last night locked all my chickens in after I filled their feed and water up. Every one was perfectly fine. Aside from Fritz. He hasn't learned to roost. So I been putting him up there at night. Did my head count and once over and locked them up.

This morning let everyone out. Then realized Lucy didn't come out. I have no idea what happen but my young EE was dead on the floor under her roost. Like she just died in her sleep and fell off to the ground. What the heck would cause a perfectly healthy young pullet to just drop over dead?

No mites. No odd behavior. Healthy weigh. Clear eyes. She was 100% herself yesterday. Only thing different they have had is I gave them a pumpkin Sunday, and dried meal worms.

I think I'll do an at home necropsy on her. Because I'm confused.... we have been painting the pole barn next door to my coop. But I dont think that had anything to do with it.
O my gosh. That is crazy. I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs :hugs

I would suspect some kind of a heart defect but who knows. Could you get a professional necropsy done? I'm not sure how good you would be identifying a heart defect or the like.

I laid her out in my back yard to do a necropsy, went to get sharp knife down mom's. Only to come back to my buzzard friends feasting. So I didn't do anything.

I'm so sorry about Lucy.😢 :hugs :hugsWe had a rooster that did that. When I was smaller I found one rooster panting a couldn't walk. I brought him in and got him rehydration. He stayed it the house a couple bays then I put him outside. He Akeem normal for about a week, then I went out on day to check on him. He was dead under his roost, which was this 10ft in the air. But chickens shouldn'tjust fall off the roost.

Yeah she was a typical normal flighty EE the day before. She flew up to her spot to bed like any other day. Then found her on the ground under her roost the next morning. Nothing out of the normal all weekend from anyone. We spent alot of time outside this weekend, so I would of noticed a strange acting chicken. My husband said he has experienced sudden chicken death syndrome in his previous flocks. Happens usually in young chickens under a year old. Said that's what it sounds like to him. I've never heard of that till recently, so I'm going to look into it. But also keep an extra eye on my flock, just incase. I've never had such bad luck with chickens till this pass year. Let hope next year brings me better luck. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I think we all need to just write off 2020. 😕
