The Front Porch Swing

Nope half a century it should have read. No way would I be a nice person if I were that old! I want to be crotchety and mean then.

Wow! I didn't realize how long it has been since I've been on. I've been trying to find a full time job while working part time at my agency. I may also be moving (just a few miles away). So, there's that too. I hope everyone is well!!!
Good luck on your job quest!! That can be daunting now a days, so

for a succcessful search!!
I am with you, its morning- I woke up and am alive and everyone in my family is in good condition so- that makes it good. This has been the worst year in TN for allergens. So we are starting the chicken tractor building back up- hopefully get more chickens out and about. Right now we have 8 3-4 level brooders in the breezeway of the barn holding everything from day old chicks to point of lay chickens. Trying to work on better ventilation for everyone stuck inside. We figure we can make several small A-frame tractors pretty easily and get a few trios out in the open. It's just hard to find the time to do all of this- with 4 kids and me and Steve both working our business full time (last week we worked several +12 hr days at the shop) it gets overwhelming sometimes.
I hear ya!! Trying to get the garden taken care of and the other outside stuff the house gets totally neglected, not to mention stuff with the kiddos... ah well... someday I'll wish I was so busy again!!

ok got a question, where is a good sight to go to get specs on different breeds. I am wanting to put together a list of what we have. Something with weight, build stature, egg color, egg laying abilities and more. Some of the info I have but need more. We have 30 different breeds and want to have good records. We ordered a SOP, we are waiting on it.
I'm going to check out that Henderson chart... does feathersite have stuff like that, too??

Haa Haa when we lived in California before I retired I used to have a job where I could dress up and I had all the great shoes, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Loubitans ,I can't even remember them all, I sold them on e-bay and used the money to buy chickens, coops, Etc. DH always asks don't you like the chickens better anyway?
lol.png

Um sure you NEED more breeds of chickens you. Know air, food, water, fire, shelter, chickens.

I call it repurposing! I find a new purpose for lots of things.
I'm with you, I'm trying to make my boys forts out of some pallets, DH isn't a huge fan of recyclying, but he's getting the hang of it, lol

Better! Had my first visit with my doctor last week. He is really nice and not pushy at all! He did an ultrasound and says everything looks great. I didn't take my BP meds because my stress level has gone down significantly and I wanted an accurate reading (well, as accurate as you can get visiting a new doctor anyway)! It was 132/84 and he is fine with that. He told me to take the meds if I feel I need to.

I am 13 1/2 weeks now.

Wow!! That's a good blood pressure!! Yay for no meds!!

Man I just got the worst hebegebies over your snake stories. Still getting the willies. I HATE snakes. Thankfully I've never seen one on our farm. We have tons of rodents, but never seen a snake. Man I'm creeped out!

Can you tell I don't like snakes?

Tiffany, I hope you can get it under control and don't lose any more birds. Don't beat yourself up over it-we have ALL done something similar at some point (and will continue to again and again).

DITTO!!! I lost some wheaten marans chicks to botulism a few weeks ago, I felt so horrible because it was my fault, I'm glad that I caught it before I lost very many, fortunately!!

We will be married 12 years in August. We are perfect for each other (this is Tiffany this time) if we have an argument It doesn't last long because I can't ever remember why we were fighting. Works out pretty good.
Hey!! Us too!! 12 years this year =) I was single for a while before getting married (well, a while for church's culture, anyway) and I MUCH prefer being married to being single, granted I did lots of fun stuff single, but none of those memories are with DH, so they're kind of fleeting...

They both died.

I am so glad we were not there today. That had to be awful for anyone watching, but especially the children.

Oh, that is sad... and weird, too... A small plane crashed at the regional airport we have here, too... don't know yet if anyone was killed, DH is working there right now and just sent me a text, right about the same time I read Heather's post..... is it a full moon?? Yesterday at work was absolutely CRAZY (I'm a nurse at our hospital in cardiology and you better believe we believe in full moons there!!)

Sorry that post was so long!! Also wanted to say it's so refreshing to read this thread!! you guys are funny and helpful and supportive, etc, etc... LOVE IT!!

I'm going to girls camp (for my church) next week as the camp nurse, so I won't be on for a little while....

Jason's employer is right across the street from the Dayton Airport and they have a family picnic tomorrow so we can all watch the airshow for free. This weekend is the Dayton Airshow. The third act today was Jane Wicker, a wingwalker. Her plane just crashed and burst into flames with her on the bottom of the wing. They are not saying if she or the pilot survived, but watching the video posted on youtube of it happening, it would be a complete miracle.

Oh my goodness! That is terrible!

Beautiful puppies, Rachael!!!
It is good to be back! My computer crashed last week, so Rachael gave us an extra one of hers to use. I have just been too busy to be online much until today, and couldn't remember my password to get on here, either!

I haven't been on in a while either, and I've missed everyone!
. Harvey used to tuck the egg up under her wing and carry it across the perch to her nest.
Now that's determination! Wow!
We have snakes. I know WHY we have snakes. We have snakes because we have frogs. Thousands of frogs. When I walk around after dark I am wading through throngs of them. If the zombie apocalypse ever happens, I don’t have to worry about what to feed the chickens…they will go on an all protein diet of fricasseed frogs. We can go out at night and catch them in nets. It’ll be fine. Why do we have frogs? We are in the bend of a “run” (read: larger than a stream, smaller than a river) and I think because of the bend, we have the perfect breeding ground for them. So we will have frogs. And snakes. But anyway: Back to the snakes: we killed yet another copperhead last night 10 feet from my front door (!!!) after a close encounter with one of our dogs. I usually have no problems with snakes, but poisonous ones around my dogs are not good. I think the dog is unbitten, couldn't find anything in a cursory exam. my mom was bitten by a copperhead once and spent months with her foot raised above heart level and not able to go to work or do anything besides lay there while her leg turned black. And all those people that claim that blacksnakes wont abide a copperhead in their territory are delusional. We have them, too.
Oh, gracious. That sounds like a LOT of frogs and the snakes...well, that's more than I want to deal with. I'm fine with the non-venomous ones. Problem is that I haven't been around them enough to identify them.

That's awesome! I'm so happy you're feeling on and your BP is under control!
I love to build thing too, the problem is I get it all worked out in my head and then when it come out it is a big mess. That is what my hubby is for! He can build really cool stuff. I love the coop he built for my chocolates and now he is making a small A frame tractor- so crafty!
I am thankful for my DH also. He is awesome at handling the building for me.
Me and my DH will be married for 24 years, next month.... Neither of us would know how to live without one another. Even though we get on each other's nerves, from time to time.... :smack we wouldn't want to grow old with anyone else. :old
That is so sweet! I love reading everyone's stories. My husband and I have been married for 11 years, but we've been together for over 17. We have a 15 year old son, but we decided to be non-traditional and wait until we had a little more time together before getting married. There was really no need to wait, though, because we're perfect for each other. Who else would smile at my craziness lol?
I love that Harvey is a girl! I am sitting here waiting for my coffee to brew, then the husband has a list of things as long as my arm that he wants to accomplish today. I mentioned to him that it was a long enough list that I'd be worried about accomplishing it in a whole week and he sheepishly agreed. I have a list, too but mine is more reasonable, I think 1. rework some compacted beds for the plants that are hanging out on the front porch 2. make some goat-proof feeders for the chickens. 3. install the new little treehouse coop that I stared a couple of weeks ago so we can move the red dorkings into it and out of the quarantine pen that they've been in for 6 months 4. weedwack.the fenceline 5. install the redundant net fence to combat the predator issue we are having actually, looking at it, I think it might be more reasonable for the whole weekend, not just for today. that might be pushing it.
Yep, that's a long list for one day.

So, so sad.

2 people were killed in the crash that happened at the airport here today, too... DH is working out there right now for SkyWest and was there when it happened.... He's worked for the airlines for years and has seen crashes before, but he said there were a few people there that kind of went into shock from seeing it... the plane was destroyed, so I can understand why it would be traumatic to see it, and it flew right over the parking lot and crashed just beyond the end of the lot, crazy, sad. A 13 yr old survived, we think his dad and the pilot were killed, feeling really sad for them tonite!

DH worked for Delta (flight attendant) during Sep 11, and went back to work the first day the planes went back up, it was absolute mayhem, and someone told me shortly after that I was crazy for letting him fly. But honestly, after seeing how long people can be sick and how much they suffer, I think I would choose a plane crash... much faster and in a way more merciful... But I could be crazy, so it's okay to tell me that, too!!

I am with you...I'd much rather go quickly after seeing my grandparents lingering demises. I don't fear death as much as being incapacitated and having to have someone deal with taking care of me and being in pain for a really long time.

that said, /I feel sorry for all the people who loved the ones that died. I hope they can find peace about it.
