The Front Porch Swing

More weirdness. Poor thing literally has another chick up its butt! There is no visible vent. Obviously cannot survive.
I spoke with one of our broiler experts here. She said that it is caused by getting too hot in the egg. She said in the summer you will see one or two fo these a day. It is nothing compared to what doesn't actually hatch. Those are really nasty. Brains, etc.

Krazy, it's a broiler....cornishx.

That's interesting Crystal. There were no extras in the box of 100, so I'm guessing they threw it in to fill the order. Wonder how many others have ome out like that? I figured with the tight genetics they have on them it was kinda like having siblings with children.

Alex doesn't want me to kill it, but he's going to have to learn about not letting an animal suffer.

Oh an no it cant walk at all. It can stand there, but that's it. If it could use its legs and had a vent I would consider keeping it, but not to make it suffer.

Back to work! Man that child is getting demanding!

I'm not sure about hatcheries, but I know we are very careful here to get outside genetics for our breeders. We do not use our own eggs for breeders. We buy from outside suppliers for all chicks that are for breeder birds.

OMG...someone SENT you a chick like that!!!????!!!!! I assumed it hatched from one of your own eggs! That is wrong...they should have put it down there!!!! that's awful.

Well I know they have been having a really bad year for hatching. Kinda like some of us.

The last batch I got I didn't check at the hatchery like I normally do because they rushed me out. I had 10 flat as pancake and stiff as cardboard chicks in the bottom. I pick my meat birds up from the hatchery and drive the 40 minutes home. No way would that have happened in that time. I think they are really hurting this year and not doing things that are best for all.

My customers want everything local or I would buy better quality from McMurrays. I'm hoping that in the next few years I can get them all switched over to dual purpose or something like the Bresse. I did finally get the stupid fatties to eat grass, but it took the right combination of layer and turkey added in to teach them that that green stuff wasn't just for pooping on. They are actually a much leaner bird that way too. Very little belly fat on them and the last birds I butchered were well over 6 pounds dressed weight. Although when they see the four wheeler coming they charge at me. They know foods on that four wheeler. It's really funny to watch those fat birds run.
