The Front Porch Swing

I hope everyone on the porch has had a wonderful week and is looking forward to the weekend! I can't wait to be off tomorrow! Very much ready for my weekend. Long week. Last night my son had a huge meltdown that lasted until he finally went to bed. Today I needed a brake. A friend asked me if I wanted to go with her to the store (she lives two towns over. About 20 min away). My son needs new shoes, he's growing out of everything! So I went. I can't find any shoes his size at thrift stores now, this is maybe the second time I've bought him new shoes. He's four, and we all know how shoes that light up make you run faster and jump higher. I decided if I had to buy new shoes, I'm getting him light up shoes! He's never had them before and he talks about his friends shoes that light up. The shoe store was having a sale and they were buy one get one half price, so I got him two pairs of shoes in the next two sizes he needs. I'm so excited for him to wake up in the morning! He will be so happy! It's looking like no rain this weekend, so I'm trying to decide what to do. I might take my son and the dog to the beach. It's not my favorite place, but they can both get their energy out and it's just so close and easy. I do like to find the little tide pool creatures and my son just loves the beach so much. I'd you guys are doing anything exciting, let me know! I'm so boring, I can live through your adventures! Lol

Alice, I'm glad you had a nice outing with your friend. Moms need time to be people! Glad you were able to find a good deal on shoes to make the little man run faster and jump higher. better put a tether on that boy now!

. I'm glad I got the evening away, a brake was needed. I feel recharged and ready for my Friday.

Cherish that time with him, meltdowns and all. They grow up too fast. I still smile thinking about light up shoes and how they would only cooperate with shoe shopping because I always had them run down the aisle to see if they could run fast in that pair. Payless always had BOGO 1/2 off and always had some marked down to $4. Those were the ones we bought and they didn't care. Now, we have to shop at Athlete's Foot or Academy and any suggestion that they run down the aisle in them results in rolled eyes and grunts. That doesn't stop me from asking............

I'm trying, some days he makes it really hard! The light up shoes are a hit! He's been playing that he's a Utahraptor, because the light up shoes make him run so fast

. Next time he needs new shoes, and I can't find any his size at the thrift store, I'll take him with me. This time I needed to go by myself. I'm glad I didn't take him. There was some lady at the store screaming at all her kids the whole time. The kids didn't seem to be doing anything, she was just non stop. I just wanted in and out!

Light up shoes are always a hit.. Thomas kept stomping his feet in his first pair. Marked down for $7 at wal-mart. I refuse to pay full price for things they wear 6 months. I've gotten nice leather shoes for $0.59 at the thrift store.

Thomas is going to be 3 tomorrow. I just made him a 'cake' (banana chocolate corn bread.. it's gluten-free). I had wanted to get him balloons, but we've been a sick ward all week. Johnathan brought a stomach bug home with him from his mom's on Monday.. we all have taken turns with it. Thomas got an ear infection on top of that. But, I think we're all ok now.

He honestly has no idea what a birthday is.. but still, gotta try and make the best of it.

Next week we're going to get started with all the therapy from the school system. Got something scheduled every day of the week. No fun for a hermit

Kendra has light up wheels on her wheelchair. Funny thing is, they are on the back balance wheels, and she can't see them anyway. Sheesh!

Took her to Walmart and some lady came up to me and just oohed and ahhed over that cool stroller. "Where did you get that? That is so cute and I'll bet my son would love it!" Um, Ma'am, you really don't want this stroller, believe me!

Funny, how the light up wheels (they have multicolored lights in them that sync with the movement and speed of the wheels) attract other little kids like magnets! They always stop and ask about her. Most parents are okay with that - and I always take the time to get down to the kids' level and explain that Kendra can't walk because her feet don't work. They seem just fine with that explanation and usually ask a few more questions or try to talk to her. Other parents shush their kids....."Shh, it's not polite to ask questions like that." Well, why not? I take even more time with those kids (and just by association, those parents) and tell them that Kendra likes all the same things they like....she just can't walk and she's just learning to talk. Fortunately Kendra loves seeing other kids because of her positive preschool experience, so I have them say a word she knows, and she'll repeat it with a big smile. Then I praise the kids who took the time. Almost always changes the parents' attitude! Instead of being critical toward them, I just smile at them and tell them they should be proud of little Johnny or Sally because they care enough about others to be curious and compassionate. The only people I just can't handle are the ones who look right through us, as if we aren't even there. Nothing says, "You are not worthy of my healthy time" like ignoring an adorable little girl just because she's sitting down as we shop. Funny how the words "ignoring" and "ignorance" are so close.

We've had to put child locks on the lower cabinets (she knows where Gramma stashes the graham crackers!) and keep her away from the buttons on the audio/video stuff! She gets into more than her share of mischief, especially once she started pulling herself up and taking a few steps along the furniture. She gets up on the couch all by herself and bounces - and yep, she's fallen off a few times but she gets right back up there!

This is what I wish people would notice first about Kendra. See the gentleness and peace in her little face?

But even in her chair she is simply beautiful! (Those tiny clear wheels behind the big tires are the ones that light up....now how stupid a design is that, I ask you?)

Sorry you are all sick. I hope your feeling better tomorrow.

Blooie, Light up wheels!? That's pretty cool! Too bad she can't see them though, but I'm sure it's nice that they get other kids to come over! And that they all are impressed with the lights! She is such a lovely little girl.
