The Front Porch Swing

I appreciate your response -- I was told to deworm the chickens after the 1st rooster died since I have no clue what he died from! He is going to the vet tomorrow to have wings clipped & spurs trimmed down so maybe he'll be good and leave a 'present' in the box for me as well - that way they can check him. I can't feed him separately since they all eat from the same feeder and the dewormer gets added to their food.

I was told to deworm them every fall to fend off anything they ate while roaming the yard -- is this true they need to be dewomer yearly? I'm also giving them electrolytes in their water - was told it just helps keep them healthy and they seem to add the little bit of powdered stuff that goes in their water -- just can't hurt them I would think.

Everyone has their own approach.

I'm personally pretty hands off. Don't care to have birds that need special treatment to be healthy. Survival of the fittest sort of thing.

My birds have been tough cookies. I've had two survive a hawk attack. It took them a bit too heal, but you wouldn't be able to pick them out now unless I pointed it out (one is missing a small chunk of her comb). Chicks go outside at 3 weeks, with a heat plate. I worm if I suspect issues. If a bird acts off I remove them, keep them in a kennel until a. they're better or b. they get worse and I dispatch them. I don't do antibiotics internally. Vet RX, Neosporin, peroxide/iodine and blu kote are my weapons of choice. If it needs more than that, I rather choose the soup pot.

@bruceha2000 This is one of those times I'm very thankful for my husband! He knows the building inspectors through work and had one of them bring us a map today with the lines and measurements for our lot. I've looked up the laws, they are responsible for half the cost and ALL the cost, plus we could make them repair the rest of the fence and sue for negligence if the fence is on their property, but with paying court fees and a lawyer it wouldn't really be worth it. I just make sure to have a big smile and wave whenever I see them now. I can tell it really annoys them! Lol. We will fix it this weekend. My husbands co worker said we should put up a wire fence until they pay us for half. It would drive them insane seeig all the daycare kids and I know one kid would put grass or weeds through the fence. It's tempting, but then we would end up paying for two fences. I'm just going to make sure to go outside as much as possible with the kids, I already do, but now I know it annoys them, so will go out more! Lol. Who gets mad about kids playing? I don't let them yell, we dont go out until 10 because I want to be respectful (not anymore! These people are the only ones who would be bugged, so now we will go out as early as the kids want!) and were only out for about an hour in the morning and one to two hours in the afternoon around 330! Can you tell I'm still annoyed? Lol. I wish court would be worth it to make them pay, but I'd lose more then I'd gain

You probably won't harm the chickens with yearly worming but if you don't KNOW they need it you could be wasting your money. Giving poison to the chickens unnecessarily is something I would not want to do.

You might want to read this from "My Pet Chicken" before you worm your flock:

Since all the chickens live and eat in the same place, ANY "sample" will do. If the rooster has worms, so do the girls and vice versa. It is the same advice I got from my vet with regard to bringing in a sample for one of our 3 indoor cats since they share a litter box.

I don't quite understand that they are responsible for half AND all.

Otherwise you are correct on all counts Alice. The lawyers at $200+/hour would cost more than the fence even if you didn't ever get to court.

Are you careful to have more than one finger extended from your palm when you wave??

My guess is they won't be neighbors for many years, not if their behavior is due to dementia or Alzheimers. Do you know anyone who has been in the neighborhood a long time? They might be able to tell you if these people have always been ornery or not. If not, I think we have an answer to why they are acting as they do now.

If the fence is fully on their property, they are responsible for all the cost and for damages caused by their fence falling in our yard. If it's on the property line, they are responsible for half the cost, but that's not going to happen, either way unless we take them to court. Sorry, I must have been thinking faster then I was typing! I re read my post and realized I didn't put that in right.

One neighbor claims they use to be nice. From the picture were getting, I think the guy was always a jerk and I think she was too, but I think they were nice to some people who they felt had better status. Can't stand those kinds of people! He definitely isn't doing well and doesn't have a firm grasp on reality. She is just mean. We share a fence, every so often a family member will stop by and we hear them talking if we're out or things here and there and they seem just as rude, so I think it's just who they are. I don't really get how someone with no manners could feel above anyone! I imagine the husband has one year, two max left at home. Then hopefully they will be gone and someone sane will move in. And, yes, I do make sure all my fingers are up when I wave! As tempted as I am to be rude, I have decided to kill them with kindness. It seems to annoy them, so it makes it all the more easier!

Sounds right, which is why I asked if you knew FOR SURE where the property line is. If the fence IS fully on their property, you don't want to replace it where it is. It has been suggested that a fence be put several feet inside one's property so the outside can be accessed for maintenance. That might be OK if you have a LARGE lot but ceding a portion of your lot to a neighbor in this way kind of sticks in my craw no matter how large the lot.

BTW, in some cities there is a zoning requirement that the "good side" (i.e. the side without the horizontal 2x4s and posts if they are not in line) HAS to face away from your property. IF that was true where you live when the fence was originally put up ... and if things were done properly (I know a BIG if), it is YOUR fence to do with as you please.

That's how I'd put it up, to keep folks from climbing over!

But considering the neighbor's temperament, I wouldn't put it past them to have the good side facing them

Our town is technically county, not city, so the rules are different. Right now the nice side of the fence is facing the neighbors, but because we are replacing it and paying, the nice side will now be facing us. Plus, they said they will shoot my husband if he comes on their property. Because, you know, normal people threaten others over a free fence. We have all the lot lines and measurements, so we will make sure everything is exact before building, but we don't have a big lot, so building a few feet in isn't an option. I am pretty sure the fence is on the property line because the neighbor next to us has the same property line as we do for the back of his yard (according to the plot lines we were just given by the inspector) and our fences match right up, but we will make sure. Having someone come out to survey your lot and let you know without you having to measure can be pretty expensive and we just don't have the money when we already have to replace the fence with no help. Another bonus though, 3/4 of the fence will be facing us and the last 1/4 will be facing them. That will really drive them crazy! Silver lining

Isn't that kind of how it works? Since I am better than YOU, I do not have to be civil to you.

You may now bow and kiss my ring .. be quick about it!!!! ;)

So unfortunate, but true. I mean, I say how they are acting and I read what I've written and it's like "there has to be more to the story", but honestly there isn't! We have never been rude them, in fact, we've been extremely nice. The first thing they did when we moved in was complain about these trees we had, we cut them down. They complained about where my husband parked his work van (too close to their driveway), we moved it and never parked it there again. I have brought their garbage cans up to their house multiple times so they didn't have too. We take our garbage to the dump, so we don't even have a garbage can. I just do it to be nice. I have picked up trash I see in their driveway. We keep our yard clean. When it's nice out were out weeding and mowing on the weekends. I'm just blown away!
