She was ok after about 20 minutes! She cried to begin with, and it bled alot, so that freaked her out a little!

Smart dogs...now you'll have two smart dogs. I think Labs are among the smartest dogs and the sweetest. My sis once had a heeler that could practically do her taxes.

He was my kids' present from my dad..... that I didn't find out about until about 20 minutes before he dropped him off!

The kids named him Ratchet. Heelers are great dogs, but I prefer border collies as herding dogs.

I love your heeler pup! The best dog I ever had was my blue heeler Rose. I loved her and still miss her. She lived to age 16. I would get another one, but I don't think I am able to deal with all of that energy those pups have.

I love your puppy lindz!! Okay guys, give me the lowdown on heelers. Are they good guard dogs, chicken dogs, etc. etc. Pros and cons. I am in the market for a dog but not sure what I want to get.

Good guard dogs, good instinctual herd dogs, not so good on chickens unless you do some early, good training as they like to herd and nip at the heels of the things they herd. Some like to nip the heels of people, especially children, and some like to "herd" tractors and cars. They just require some training on those things...they are super smart but can take over if you are not dominant. Meet the parents of the pups and find out what they are like...some can be a little aggressive, so avoid those traits.

What's your budget and are you looking for an outside full time dog, Lisa?

They are good dogs but very "high strung" meaning they HAVE to have a job. If they don't they will make themselves a job and most of the time you are not going to like it. They are very good herding dogs and really have a lot of grit sometimes so much that they will go above and beyond. My dad put his heeler to herding horses and she got kicked really bad but got up and went back after them until he called her off. She had a concussion and lacerations but didn't quit until made to. In my opinion they are generally one person dogs.... not that they always are but all I have been around prefer one person over every other. They can get along with other dogs cats and chickens but you have to start really young. They are a very driven breed.

Thank you very much for the information. Interesting. Usually any animals we get, they tend to depend on me. Probably because I am the one that trains, feeds, and is home all day with them. These guys are like having Belgians or Percherons--they need/want to be worked. I haven't had a dog in several years and would like to get another one. One of these days......
