The Front Porch Swing

Are we down to buckets???? Gonna have to get some more swings on this porch.....here, ATH..you can have my seat. Don't mind the wet spot...LJ has had me laughing too hard and..well..you know.

Here's a towel to put down....

Well, I only have 6 hens and one rooster. Only one Buff Orpington left from my original 7 from 3 years ago. She stopped laying and went broody last year fall. A friend gave me 12 fertilized eggs. Only 5 survived and they were ALL roosters. I rehomed 4 and kept one. He was tormenting the only 2 hens I had so I recently got 4 more hens. Everyone is healthy--actually healthier since they arrived and they all get along just fine.

To suddenly have six hens was a little too exciting for the roo and he was a little aggressive with them. One is isolated because he bit a hole in her head making her bloody and a target for everyone else. She is recovering well. Thankfully he is settling down a bit... a bit, sort of. Probably need more girls.

No spring plans in terms of chickens. Last year I was commuting 150 miles a day and had no time for anything. This year hope to start another garden. I can't wait for the better weather.
What are you doing? What is the status of your rescued bunch?

Wow...lot of water under the bridge for both of us! The only two I have left of the Gnarly Bunch is Little Red Hen(still laying about 4 eggs per week!) and Middle Sister(about 2 per week). The rest have been culled for nonlaying and in anticipation of age related problems. Even old Toby was culled this past winter. All were still healthy and looking great but it was just time to eat them before I had to kill them for other reasons.

Just had to cull Fanny/Black Betty due to egg tumors(she should have been in the fall cull but I let sentiment take over) and Jake has been carrying her around for a couple of weeks now. He doesn't want her to leave the flock and so he keeps tabs on her. Going to have to slip her off and away before it gets warmer.

Now only have 8 hens and one rooster I got for free in a free assorted bunch of roosters I got out of the locals for canning up for meat. Guess what? He's a foo foo bird! Yes! I officially have a standard Cochin..a sissy bird. But the Lord told me to keep him and so I did...I have no idea why he is here. He's very pretty... but pretty useless otherwise. He has only crowed a couple of times, so at least he's not annoying.

Other than that, just trying to walk closer to the Lord every day and have been visiting a lot on here with all sorts of new friends and old ones. I've got an experiment going with a new/old way to incubate eggs(my first attempt at incubating!) and it's catching on...others are doing it too. You know me...can't do it like everyone else, got to try something different.

I have that test batch of gluten free dairy free sugar free duck egg custard to share.

Where's that wiping-tongue-on-carpet smiley?

Ack!

I tried freezing it ... nope. Still not gonna work.

What a waste of duck eggs.

We have one of those???? I don't know that I've ever intentionally had custard in my life. It just sounds too much like mustard and I can't seem to put mustard in my mouth for a dessert.

Hi, Catherine! I'm new here too, but settling in nicely thanks to some very nice people and some very good sweet tea! My name is Diane...nice to meet you!

Blooie is our resident story teller...sit and give a listen to her stories, they are great! Every porch needs an official story teller. They have contests for that in my state. For real!

We could call it lazy flan instead. Or sweet steamed eggs? It really is yummy. It reminds me of super delicious ice cream, but I like to eat it warm instead of chilled.
