The Front Porch Swing

We could call it lazy flan instead. Or sweet steamed eggs? It really is yummy. It reminds me of super delicious ice cream, but I like to eat it warm instead of chilled.

I'd like to take your word for it...but Gust told me it tastes sort of like mustard. Who to believe?

He's a pretty reliable dog....

No, I can't imagine you with a foo foo roo but then beauty is beauty.
I am surprised your flock is so small.
I have a question for you. My eldest hen, the Buff, lays a shell less egg every time. She has access to all the nutrients she needs and declines oyster shell that I pound to a fine consistency. No one else has shell problems.
I don't really need her eggs but should I be "doing" something about this or just let her be? I'd love to get your opinion.
See--only 5 minutes and I've started with the questions.
What is this new incubation? Is there a thread?

When they age out their reproductive parts start to wear out...sort of like us. Her shell gland might be done. Those leather eggs are mighty uncomfortable for them to lay and they require a lot straining...often you'll find them on the coop floor under the roosts because they feel like they are having a bowel movement. They can cause prolapse and such.

This is one of those issues that occur with age and can become a problem as they age even further as their ovulation starts firing abnormally, they lay internally, etc. She could go on like that for a couple more years without anything but the uncomfortable laying...or she could develop problems and have some suffering before she finally dies of it. You know me...I always advocate for the humane cull before you need to cull due to pain or illness. I ignored my own advice this year and Fanny had to suffer for a bit before she was killed, which is never my intention for any of my birds.

It's in the hatching part of the forum..you can't miss it! I've named it the Simulated Natural Nest Incubation or some such thing...hadda call it somethin'.

You know I like to mother hen everyone within a 2000 mile radius..... So, how many chickens do you have now and do you have any spring projects coming up? I'm incubating some eggs for the first time in my life and it's been a real hoot....I've killed two batches already and part of another.

Welcome to the Front Porch! The dogs setting next to Bee are Jake and Boots! Pat them on the head and throw them a stick. Would you like Sweet or unsweetened tea? Be careful these Chewy Chocolate Cherry Bars are hot. Fresh out of the oven.

Lisa :)

yumm! got any without chocolate? I LOVE cherries!

Be careful...you'll get my Mom to thinking of something else she can try to stay young and active. She's already thinking of horseback riding sessions for this spring....I can just see her in biker clothes.....Jake too.

Ahhh, your Mom is picture perfect. I really like that photo!

Are we down to buckets???? Gonna have to get some more swings on this porch.....here, ATH..you can have my seat. Don't mind the wet spot...LJ has had me laughing too hard and..well..you know.

We have one of those???? I don't know that I've ever intentionally had custard in my life. It just sounds too much like mustard and I can't seem to put mustard in my mouth for a dessert.
Oh Bee, you really should try it. It is one of the creamiest and most delightful things you will ever try! Tastes NOTHING like mustard... I don't like the stuff either but custard?

Blooie is our resident story teller...sit and give a listen to her stories, they are great! Every porch needs an official story teller. They have contests for that in my state. For real!
Oh WOW! This is so much better than making Oprah's Book List or winning a Pulitzer Prize! I'm in the running as the Story Laureate of the Chicken Forums! I'm so proud! Thank you, thank you so much for this honor. I'll try to be worthy!

I am sure you are right and I feel like an irresponsible chicken owner for not doing it. She hasn't laid an egg with a shell once in the past 2 years. If she was yours she'd be gone long ago.
But then she went broody and was a wonderful mother. She got really upset with the roo trying to mount her and came in the house and refused to leave. I had to "escort" her to the safety of her coop so that she wouldn't be molested. That's why I ran out and got 4 pullets.
She seems healthy and happy and always wants to come inside to see if I have peanuts for her. I pray she goes quickly when her time comes.
Now it's all everyone's fault here with your hospitality and offer of sweets that I am compelled to make corn bread that hopefully will resemble angel cake and I will slather it with Amish butter.
You are invited.

If she's been doing that for 2 years it could be that she could keep going like that for a couple years more without problems..who knows? You'll just have to follow your instincts on that one.

I'll be culling Middle Sister this month I think...we'll see if she wants to adopt these chicks first.
