I agree about being new...I know absolutely ZIP about breeding for a specific thing or about breeding at all. The extent of my breeding knowledge could be gathered into a thimble and you still couldn't feel it if you dipped in your pinkie finger. To me it's like mating up socks...that's how basic I am going into this thing. Sometimes that's a big ol' hindrance and sometimes it can be a plus, as I have no preconceived ideas that I'm going to have a champion heritage breed bird at any show or that anyone will be knocking down my door for eggs from my "line".

I call it "country dumb"....we know just enough to get things right sometimes but we really can't tell you how we got there.

That's me. No finesse, no innate eye for poultry, no feelings of being a fancier...I just want a bird that works and is a passable representation of the breed that won't keel over dead if a germ slides up next to it in the yard. I'll keep it simple because that's all I know. I'll keep it results driven because that's what I believe in. I'll keep it steady because I don't let sentimentality, pride or greed rule my motives.

That's really all I have to offer to the poultry breeding world.

Discovered another problem with equipment for this incubation experiment but I've ordered something to correct it...but that put my cost higher than I had wanted...which was zero. I had wanted to spend nothing on incubation but now I've had to spring for something. My goal was to make everything here from items I had on hand. I had this piece of equipment but it's too small for the job, though I can get started with it at first. I'll replace it with a larger thing when it comes.

I'm getting closer to getting the way I want it, day by day. I just pray that it works the way I think it will so that I don't play with chicks' lives and cause any suffering that was needless.

good post bee. an'it the truth simple does it.

I'm listening to some good sermons and working on my incubator project tonight and am really loving how it's working out. Getting excited to see it all put together and if it works the way I think it will. I think you all will get a hoot out of it!

Man, is this forum dead tonight! Must be something good on TV to lure folks away, 'cause they aren't chattering on the forum tonight. What's the big draw out there in TV land?

My life is always weird like this....was raised without TV and haven't had one all these years(at least, not with any programming...just VCR/DVD player) since, so I never do know what is playing and am always mystified when folks can't get away from their programming. Just called one son and he was in a hurry to get off the phone to watch some gun show thingy.

You'd think I'd get used to this but it always surprises me when the population collectively signs off of all other activities to park in front of the black box, like one big family. It's puzzling and a little scary to think of something as powerful as that controlling the masses.

I think it's supposed to be the Olympics ... Opening Ceremony or something? I don't have network tv in my part of the house but I do have plenty of Netflix ...so I can only tell you what's on a couple years later. ;)

Network TV would do me no good today as it is OH!!! NO!!! Snowmageddon!!! in Oregon right now. That's all they'll talk about for at least a day after whenever the last flake melts. Cuz that's really what the people who are stuck at home want to watch instead of the Olympics. We can't drive when it's snowing in this part of Oregon ....

Exactly!!!! But snow is as to these mountains as water is to ducks and people still freak out every snow storm like it's something new and a strange phenom to be discussed ad nauseum.

Did anyone else have trouble with BYC last night? After about 8:30 or so I kept getting error messages. That's why I was not on.

I didn't have any problem but that would explain the silence of the chickens.

It was like a morgue in here last night.

I had trouble with it too. All error messages. It cleared up about 20 minutes after it started.

Michigan, checking in!!!

Drag up a chair, tell us a story, sip something tasty and try the snacks. Today we are having chicken salad on Romaine spears, farmer's cheese and Townhouse crackers, and whatever you brought along. What did you bring?
