The Front Porch Swing

I'm not their care taker. i never mind helping a soul in hard times. most of these men came out of 1/2 way and 3/4 way addiction housing the next step is independent living. my goodness really. there comes a time when personal responsibility becomes a major factor in ones life.
in my life i was also a homeless addicted drug addict . i always took care of my place to sleep because i knew that was the only one i had.. soon they will find that out also. the hard way. sad just sad..
Bruce I am sorry you are having this experience. A BIG congrats on overcoming your addiction!!! I know it is never truly gone and that is why you don't need these guys to send you back. You need to give them the boot. If you feel the need again to help someone out I can recommend giving a homeless animal a home. They truly know how to appreciate what they are given. Plus you can teach them something and they don't resent it! LOL

I was married to a guy once that was much like the ones you described. I hope you noticed the past tense! LOL I just plain got tired of picking up, cleaning up, and doing all the work inside and outside the home. It just wears one out to where you don't care and you don't need that. Give yourself some credit for being a great guy and take back your life!

Help! Came home from church and half my girls were missing and feathers everywhere. Found this one with a bald spot and wound. Everyone else came out of hiding...what should I do for her?

I think you did the right thing for her, via PM. What do you think has caused your predation? That's a tough pill to swallow....sounds like you may have a pair of foxes, pack of 'yotes?

Bruce, sorry about your terrible tenants. :( And Lindz, sorry about your chickens. :(

I lost my first chick today, she died during the night. She was struggling, and I knew she wouldn't make it. I cuddled her last night and cried and prayed for God to take her. Who knew a little chick could steal my heart so much after just 4 days.

My other chicks are doing so well, and getting so big so fast!!

As for me, I am so sick of the winter. We usually don't get a lot of snow here, but we have gotten a LOT this year. I am ready for spring!!! Can't wait to get my hands in the dirt again. :)

It's hard to watch a chick die and it's usually a nice, big healthy looking one. They sort of just sleep away, don't they? I hold them while they go too. Just seems to be the right thing to do.

You guys might know ... Can I make BBQ sauce out of ketchup? I've got lots of ketchup I would never use, don't ask, and a rack of raw pork ribs someone brought home ... no BBQ sauce in the house ... I do have sugar, vinegar, spices ... I've never made BBQ sauce before and know anything out of a bottle wouldn't be any healthier than ketchup, and probably worse.

Here's a place online from whence I get recipes of things I don't regularly make but have had need of making...and it has several BBQs with ketchup! http://allrecipes.com/recipe/a-very-popular-bbq-sauce/

Thanks Bee! We went to church this morning, so I didn't open the run until we got back. Which, half the flock flies over anyway, and it is more to keep things out rather than keep them in.... Anyway, the older rooster was missing as well as 5 of my RSL's. It took me 15 minutes or so to coax everyone else out from under the coop. Thats when I noticed that the one's head and feathers looked funny... I tried to pick her up, and she ducked under my hands, but I had blood on my fingers. I tried to catch her for another 15 minutes before Hubby came down and helped me. Since the feathers and everything was in the run, and so was she, I am thinking it was probably a hawk attack because there was no sign of anything else. Normally our predation is from the neighbor's huskies! UGH....
I brought her in the house and used a syringe to squirt warm water into the wound to clean it out, and then used a qtip and slathered some Nustock on it. I fed her in the dog crate and waited until I went to close up for the night and took her down and put her back into the coop. She was in shock when I found her, but she seemed to be coming out of it when I took her back down. She had eaten quite a bit of the FF that I gave her, and had pooped 2 big times. I'll check her early in the morning and see where to go from there.... If the Nustock doesn't seem to be helping I will mix some honey and baking soda and pack it. Luckily her feathers cover the wound, and you can't see it unless you hold the feathers back. She also has a big bald spot on the back of her neck where the feathers were pulled out.....
