The Front Porch Swing

Busy weekend around here! Mostly just clean-up stuff....

This morning the Hubby let me sleep in! The dogs kept pitching a fit, so he didn't go let the chickens out. When I got up and went out, they were READY to hit the yard looking for breakfast! I went out behind the coop into the edge of the woods to check the live trap.... Sure enough, we had a possum in it. Chickenboy, you might not wanna read this........ actually, I'll put it in a spoiler!!!!

I called Hubby to get the .22 and he brought it down. Hubby came down and shot her.... she also had 9 babies in her pouch. Since the momma was already gone, he went ahead and put the babies down too....It made me sad, but they would just have been potential predators later in the summer.....

ANY WAY.......

We went to Lowe's to get the stuff to put in a nipple waterer.... Hubby didn't like the idea of a 5 gallon bucket, so he is going to make a pvc one. He spoils me!

We were down there working on it and he was watching the chickens and I made the comment that the flock looked a lot smaller, and how 2 hens and a handful of chicks made that big of a difference. He replied "Yea, but you'll have more soon!" I'm glad he's not grumpy about the eggs in the incubator and under the broodies. I've been painting the little coop and trying to get rid of the mites in there so that it is ready for the babies when they hatch. I'm trying to decide whether or not to move the 2 hens in there too..... I have 45 eggs set, so I'm not sure if they could handle all the chicks.... of course depending on how many hatch.....

I hope everyone has had a wonderful and extremely blessed Sunday! Prayers for everyone! I've got to jump off here and make supper! We have home-made ice cream churning in the kitchen sink! (The ice-cream maker bucket leaks... )

Good.... I am glad. Raising up a baby for a pet is one thing but taming a wild one.... Plus they carry a zipload of diseases and parasites...

from http://daviswiki.org/opossums

""Opossums very rarely carry rabies because of their unusually low (for mammals) body temperatures. However, they are known to carry diseases like leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, and trichomoniasis.""

Yeah. I just kinda never worry about that stuff.

Change your mind about keeping her?
Well for her yes. I talked to this person who knows all about that kinda stuff and she said I should let Bob go. For her sake.

My husband is such an enabler. He asked me a few days ago whether I was getting Buckeyes, because he knew I wanted them last year. I told him I really hadn't looked for any this year. About 15 minutes later he told me I was getting 15 Buckeyes this week. He ordered them from a hatchery in WI. He was so proud of himself that I didn't tell him I didn't want hatchery birds. Oh well, I will pick the best to breed and maybe find some from a better line. Tomorrow we need to build another brooder as both of mine are full and I don't think the older ones are ready for the growout pen yet.
Clara the cow is still out but coming into the pasture deeper every day. Maybe she will be confined by next week. I hope she does soon because we locked the Great Pyr in the kennel with the puppy and she is not a happy camper.

I just saw you live in New Concord Ohio. That's like 35 mins away from where I live. Unless that's a different New Concord.
