We got home from the mountains and found Jake had been hunting for his supper while we were gone....had caught himself a cottontail rabbit and had eaten half of it already and had also killed a big ol' mole, which makes Mom glad...she has a war on for those things in this yard. I love a dog that forages for his own food whenever possible and Jake is just such a dog...and he can only cover about 1/2 acre on his electric system, but he sure does make good use of his space.
All other animals were safe and accounted for, as per usual. Broody hen is still stuck tight to her wooden eggs and a practice egg, so took out the practice egg and gave her 6 WR eggs, which will be the first breeding with these heritage bred WRs. I'm just hoping I gave her the right eggs and we don't have a bunch of Australorps runnin' around in a month.
Will collect 6 more eggs over the next 6 days to place in the incubator and then slip the chicks to her when they hatch. Love having a broody in the house!
Will be getting more KC ducks on the 14th and hope to start breeding those when they mature so I can sell a couple batches of chicks to defray the original cost of the parent stock. We have a KC desert here in my state since Horsts will not ship ducks into WV, so I'm hoping to capitalize on that a little. I think someone else might have gotten the same idea because one man came down to TSC and bought almost a hundred KC ducklings.
