The Front Porch Swing

Tomtommom, I bet you wouldn't want to take your children with you on that swap. People over there are starving to death, literally. Many of them are being killed by their government as they scurry around looking for food and water. I forgot what the death toll is. It's in the millions. Many are also being taken as slaves. I agree on the trivial things that we have our lives filled with though. I have thought a lot on that lately.

Oh no, I wouldn't want to go for real. It's just one of those passing thoughts. All this excess we have in the west is going to be what does us in. In truth there should be a better balance between us that have and they that have not.

After the discussions of Lybia, Egypt, Sudan, Iran... I decided to reacquaint myself with the locations of these countries.

Not only WOW was i Wrong on them... but profoundly wrong on where Lybia is...

Then I came across a very interesting map comparison...

Very interesting. You know, I never thought about how big Africa is. In all honesty, I don't think much about Africa at all. It seems such a lost cause I fear I stick my head in the sand about it.

Of all continents, Africa is the one I know the least about.

I stopped watching most news. I read headlines and that's it. Too much insanity going on around the world.. I try and better my own backyard and not add to the problem.

I keep trying to read through everything! Haha! Like lindz8504, I got behind, but I've only not been on this weekend! Yesterday yardsale and lemonade stand.... And today
400

Trying to get family time in before my son and I leave my husband behind to go on a week long camping trip starting this Saturday. Then I'll be super behind on this thread.

I also worry about the dos and do nots. Most of us have zero clue how to take care of ourselves without air conditioning and microwaves and google.

That version of the map always floors me.The hubs is there now working. The very first thing he said to me when he had been there a couple of days was "every american should have to come to a third world country, it truly puts things in perspective." We no longer take our communications for granted.

I also no longer watch the news as they do not give accurate reports. I speak to people who actually live there and compare versions. Main stream media almost always gets it wrong.

Quote: My son first showed me that one the other day.... Amazing.

I go to BBC sources for international info.

Back in PacMan days I was a fledgling Designer. I worked for a company that built TV News trucks. The big kind that fit into Two Semi Trucks. I signed on with them just after they sold one to KANO Africa. I believe that was Nigeria. We landed a C-5A at Lindbergh field to ship that trailer over. The trailer had to be Bullet proofed.

I believe most people forget or never knew that Africa is made of a lot of different countries. There are a lot of very different people, cultures, landscapes, etc there.

Of all continents, Africa is the one I know the least about.

I am right the opposite. I NEED to see what's going on everywhere. When I see so many suffering and struggling just to live it helps me to keep things in perspective. Sometimes I forget and start almost feeling sorry for myself about something or start worrying or obsessing over something that doesn't amount to a hill of beans. But when I look at people like those in the Sudan I feel like crap for my self-centered poor pitiful me attitude about whatever. So that sort of thing helps to keep me in check. I need that.
