The Front Porch Swing

Hello friends!

I've been quietly lurking lately, so busy with the end of the school year.

First and most importantly, thoughts and prayers to those who need them.

Last day of Kindergarten for my little man, where in the world did the time go? Two months off before back to school and 1st grade!!

Thought of you, Blooie, when my Wyoming travel guide hit the mailbox last week. It had this really cool vintage looking "Yellowstone or BUST" road trip sticker in it. We won't make it that far this summer, but maybe in a couple years!

Day ten on my rookie broody experience. I decided that I would candle once at day ten to remove any clears and then keep my hands off and let momma do what she does best. This being both the broody and my first time, and no clue on the fertility of my barnyard mix of chickens, I figured I would get lucky if a couple showed development. Even more so if a chick actually hatched. Well… my untrained eye noted a spiderweb of blood vessels in all TEN eggs! Movement in at least 4, but most of the eggs are blue/green or brown so I had to look really hard. I also looked quick as I didn't want to disturb the nest much. This could be the about craziest thing I have ever done!!!!

The weather has been crazy here. Severe thunderstorms every day, but then completely dry and pretty. We must've had a foot of rain since Saturday

The run is one big muddy mess. Poor birds. The garden is loving it.. although the plants look a little disheveled from the utter force of the rain when it comes down. Lots of small branches down all over too. So far my peaches are still attached to the tree, a small miracle, considering the pecan trees across the street have dropped small ones all over my yard.

My step-son is home again. Apparently he put up a fight when his dad went to get him.... Hurt his feelings badly. But like I tell him: If you're a kid, which house would you pick? The one where there are no rules, you can watch TV and play video games all day, go to bed when you want, eat junk food all day. Or would you pick the one with rules, chores, TV/game limits, a bed time, wholesome meals with veggies? He's 6, he's going to pick option number one. He seems glad enough to be home once he gets here, it's just hard at the time.

The baby has been screaming all night.. so ofcourse now she's been passed out, only woke up twice for a feeding

Don't bother to try and wake her, not happening, we've tried. Poor daddy got two hours of sleep without her crying. But.. it'll pass before we know it, so I try and stay positive. It's easier for me ofcourse, I don't have to go to work.

We had our first peach this morning from our tree. HEAVEN!

Is there anything more delightful than a juicy piece of fruit out of your own yard? Zero pesticides, just gotta cut around the bug holes

Oh, I wrote that letter to my dad. Kept it friendly and cheery, saying I just want to remember the good times and move on. I have yet to mail it, the weather has been unpredictable. Gotta go to town tomorrow, so that's when I'll do it.

That's possible but they were found on the floor in the same spot each time. But I have had a hen drop an egg out from under a wing when picked up. Beats me...???

We're getting tied up in technicalities here. The bottom line is the broody hen could have moved her partially incubated eggs herself ... knowingly or not ... hens moving eggs is common enough here. They've never told me why, but I've seen how.

How about a third party? Rodent or snake tried to get one, chicken said HECK NO and egg ended up in a different spot. Maybe?

You poor thing! What was wrong with her?

Yes, the taste of anything you've grown on your land, all natural and full of goodness, is always better than anything in the store. That's why I love to garden...it's fresh, it taste better and it's right there waiting when you want it. That first tomato sandwich of the year and the first corn on the cob are always my biggest garden pleasure.

That must be hard to have a step child that comes and goes....so hard on the child to move from one set of rules and atmosphere to the next and back again. I've seen it over and over and it's never easy.

I remember that, it does pass so fast!

Yummmmmm I want a peach tree. About 4 years ago I bought 8 different fruit trees, the only one that made it was the pear tree. We had some really bad droughts and I just could not compete. Even the rabbits were eating the bases to get something to eat. Have yet to get a pear off the tree that made it, maybe I should go check on it.

Heart: if you can let the truck set for a while, park it in a spot that gets full sun. Then, in the evening, after the wasp has gone to bed in her nest, put a gallon sized (or what ever size that fits) plastic bag over the mirror, taping it securely in place so she can't get out. In the morning, she'll be beating her brains out, and trying to get through the top of the bag. You can spend a moment in careful contemplation of the beauty of such an insect, then carefully kill her until she's very dead. Of course, there will be larvae in the nest that will hatch before long, so, after Mama has been dealt with, you'll need to manually remove them, and the remnants of the nest as well.
