The Front Porch Swing

You guys might know ... Can I make BBQ sauce out of ketchup? I've got lots of ketchup I would never use, don't ask, and a rack of raw pork ribs someone brought home ... no BBQ sauce in the house ... I do have sugar, vinegar, spices ... I've never made BBQ sauce before and know anything out of a bottle wouldn't be any healthier than ketchup, and probably worse.

Leslie,

Here is a recipe for a barbecue sauce similar to....of not the same as....a popular local barbecue joint here in TN. I give it to you as sort of a guide just to give you an idea about what kind of spices goes into it. I have made this and tweaked it with a little more sweet or a little more heat, and canned it. It is quite good.

Leslie, I have lost my mind......I forgot to post the link!

Thanks Bee! We went to church this morning, so I didn't open the run until we got back. Which, half the flock flies over anyway, and it is more to keep things out rather than keep them in.... Anyway, the older rooster was missing as well as 5 of my RSL's. It took me 15 minutes or so to coax everyone else out from under the coop. Thats when I noticed that the one's head and feathers looked funny... I tried to pick her up, and she ducked under my hands, but I had blood on my fingers. I tried to catch her for another 15 minutes before Hubby came down and helped me. Since the feathers and everything was in the run, and so was she, I am thinking it was probably a hawk attack because there was no sign of anything else. Normally our predation is from the neighbor's huskies! UGH....
I brought her in the house and used a syringe to squirt warm water into the wound to clean it out, and then used a qtip and slathered some Nustock on it. I fed her in the dog crate and waited until I went to close up for the night and took her down and put her back into the coop. She was in shock when I found her, but she seemed to be coming out of it when I took her back down. She had eaten quite a bit of the FF that I gave her, and had pooped 2 big times. I'll check her early in the morning and see where to go from there.... If the Nustock doesn't seem to be helping I will mix some honey and baking soda and pack it. Luckily her feathers cover the wound, and you can't see it unless you hold the feathers back. She also has a big bald spot on the back of her neck where the feathers were pulled out.....

I've used the NS on a very deep puncture wound in a chick's throat that was bubbling air and blood out of it...applied it once after a cleaning, and within a couple of days the wound had sealed up and had no inflammation. The same chick had been scalped and that flap sealed right back like it had never happened. Within a week I couldn't tell which chicks had been injured. That NS is great!

I don't know that a hawk could carry off half of your flock...was the fence breached by something else that could climb it or get through? How many birds are missing?

And here are a bunch of pictures to get the gross one off of the recent pics!

WOW, woman!!! You are rollin' in the eggs!!!

Well...my incubation project has been advanced one more step this evening and I was finally able to regulate temps in one setting. I'll see if I can regulate them where it counts when I get this thing set up. Can't wait to get this thing started and see if it can be accomplished!

It didn't carry off any... the rest were out of the fence and hiding in the brush or in the fence and under/in the coop.... Our fence is made out of rebar panels on most sides and solid boards on one section. There was just the one injured hen.... Everyone else came out of hiding after about 45 minutes! Sorry, didn't mean to be confusing!

LOL... that was back before Christmas, and was about 3 weeks worth of eggs! Now I am getting about that many in a week or so.

Good! I was thinking that was quite a massacre considering how many chickens you have! Says a lot for being able to scatter out of the run...like fish in a barrel in a run. I'm glad the hawk didn't get its prey. That pup of yours needs to grow up and in a hurry!
