The Front Porch Swing

bwhaahahah,,,, funny how that momma bear comes out in us when we feel our family is threatened....

When I first moved up to my patch of heaven there was an ongoing massive fire in San Diego.... I had family evacuated from one house to settle in another only to have to move every one back to the other house. .... There were herds of mule deer running in front right up through residential areas.... Up at my place sixty miles away the first two years the mule deer And the predators were concentrating there because they were following the deer.

It has settled down since thank goodness. The only thing I have to really worry about are packs of dogs. URG.... Hey I have a question for you.... My opinion is to not remove a predator unless they become dangerous to people.... but to condition them to leave YOUR stuff alone.... that way you know he is keeping out other predators.... Dos that make sense...

Deb, that makes perfect sense! In fact the same thing applies with feral cats... if you trap, spay/neuter, and return, new cats won't move into the area.... but if you trap/kill and remove the population, more will just move in and it is an endless cycle.

You're braver Than I am!!! I'm still a kid when it comes to veggies.

Life is too short to hold back...I've systematically faced down many fears I've had over the years because I am not called to live in a spirit of fear...even of veggies!

I boogie boarded in the Atlantic, though I'm deathly scared of deep, dark waters=SHARKS. I went white water rafting though I get motion sickness pretty badly...LOVED it! I got honeybees though I hate bees and all they stand for...except honeybees, which I think are wonderfully designed by God. It was very scary to tend them..made my skin crawl. I've grabbed snakes by the tail and killed them for eating my chicks. I went snorkeling in the Caribbean(scared of sharks like nobody's business), flew on a plane though I was ill from it for 5 hrs one way each time, went on a cruise and even on sailboats...with motion sickness like mad. I would love to sky dive or even learn to fly a plane, though my body is now scared of heights. Would love to learn how to surf..sharks or no sharks..I'd do it while I shook like a leaf all the while if I could get this fat body to balance upright on a board.

There are many things I have feared in this life but now I know I need have no fear of any of them, even death, for death has been conquered.

Eat those asparagus...they were really good!

First time I had ever even seen a cooked asparagus, so I had to try it.

Same with snakes but can be even worse, you might swap non-venomous for venomous.

Evening ya'll ! Just wanted to drop by the porch and say hello to you lovely bunch of folks.

It's a chilly evening here with a current temp of 21 F with a windchill of 14 F. The birds are tucked in for the night, the wood fire is stoked and snapping away and I'm sitting here with a hot cup of tea taking it all in.

Just a few photos looking out over the Gulf of Maine from my home... You can see the storm clouds rolling in with the clearer skies in the foreground.

Thought I'd chuck a pic in of the birds hanging out around the coop soaking up some sun yesterday

Love these pics and that cheery red coop! My last coop was barn red with white trim and it always made me smile to look at it. How are you liking your coop's design for this weather? Is there anything you would change about it to make it more suitable? I'm going to be making some changes in the spring to mine as this weather has shown me some things I do not like about my current set up.

I agree about being new...I know absolutely ZIP about breeding for a specific thing or about breeding at all. The extent of my breeding knowledge could be gathered into a thimble and you still couldn't feel it if you dipped in your pinkie finger. To me it's like mating up socks...that's how basic I am going into this thing. Sometimes that's a big ol' hindrance and sometimes it can be a plus, as I have no preconceived ideas that I'm going to have a champion heritage breed bird at any show or that anyone will be knocking down my door for eggs from my "line".

I call it "country dumb"....we know just enough to get things right sometimes but we really can't tell you how we got there.

That's me. No finesse, no innate eye for poultry, no feelings of being a fancier...I just want a bird that works and is a passable representation of the breed that won't keel over dead if a germ slides up next to it in the yard. I'll keep it simple because that's all I know. I'll keep it results driven because that's what I believe in. I'll keep it steady because I don't let sentimentality, pride or greed rule my motives.

That's really all I have to offer to the poultry breeding world.
simple? Y I LOVE simple these days!!! lol In fact I am just a simple person and don't see a thing wrong with it.
