The Front Porch Swing

I've never heard of the permie forum.

When I was first getting into chickens and had the idea to convert one of the abandoned greenhouse frames to a chicken coop, I looked around on the internet for signs of other people making chicken houses out of "found" stuff. I came across Robert Plamondon ... he is from Oregon, and he does a lot of

over people spending a lot of $$$ on chickens.

In some ways he reminds me of someone here (

), but I'm not sure he has quite as many years of experience with chickens or with getting the most out of the least ... His wife Karen "designed" (through much amusing trial and error, though now I can't find those posts) a Hoop Coop like some of us in this thread are using. The wife, Karen, does the broiler end of their poultry business herself. Here is a link to a writeup about their Hoop Coop ...

"A cheap chicken coop is a good chicken coop." "I don't like spending more than $200 on a coop for 50 chickens."

Hey Bee I have a couple of questions....

First: I was talking to my mom about the use of Caster Oil as a topical remedy..... She asked if it caused Peoples bowels to loosen. I figured youd have to use alot topically to have that effect.... I remember dad used to talk about going to the drag races and because they used Caster Oil as a machine lubricant that even the fumes could cause your bowels to loosen.

Second: My legs swell to the point that I have to lay down for an hour or two every day to let them go down.... Caused by inactivity and sitting in a chair most of the day.... I have always had poor circulation even when I was thin they would swell. I also have pain in my knees all the time.... feels like someone is taking an icepick and trying to pry my knee caps off. Which keeps me from getting on my feet and doing a little walking. IF I could relieve the pain a little and mitigate the swelling a little with the use of Caster Oil I would love to give it a try.

The Pain can be managed by over the counter drugs like Aleve and Ibuprophin and tylenol. I had a doctor actuallly tell me to take three GRAMS of Ibupropin per day because my insurance wouldnt pay for celebrex. Yeh it worked but my gut fell like some one hit me with a hammer in it. So I dont take anything and deal with the pain.... I will load up if I need to do some work or afterwards when I have had to do something I hadnt planned on.

So I want to give Caster OIl a try to see if it helps if it is appropriate.

I don't think it will loosen bowels if used topically...I've been using it for knee pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and even breast pain and I only wish it would loosen my bowels.

It didn't loosen the bowels of the chickens I gave it to topically and orally and it didn't loosen the bowels of the cat on which I applied it topically.

I think you are safe.

Another thing you can try that won't take the pain away but it sure can distract you from it for a long while and it's the only thing really getting me by on the really bad days...I don't take anything but Aleve either but it doesn't really cut the pain I have so I use other methods to knock it down. This stuff is better if you get it from Dollar General...the stuff at Family Dollar is not as good and the stuff at Walmart is expensive and not as good.

It has no pain relieving properties whatsoever when speaking of medicine but it can work on proprioceptive principles to let you not feel the underlying pain in that area for long periods of time, which helps you stay mobile when pain would normally keep you still. This stuff has been a lifesaver for me and it works even better than Biofreeze, the very expensive name brand. Except this only cost $1.75 per jar.

Yep...I've read some of his stuff. Some of it I really like...I've even quoted his information on deep litter for preventing coccidiosis in chicks and chickens.

Quote: Thanks Bee... I am going to give the Caster Oil a try. I will see if I can find a source for the Analgesic Gel. The last Rexall here closed back in the early seventies. I dont do dollar stores .... or havent in a very long time. I will check out the ones around to see if they have it.

She probably didn't hear a thing you said after the words "Castor Oil." Back in the day, I think they used it as a cure-all and well-intentioned mothers would give it to their kids by the tablespoon full!

I figured youd have to use alot topically to have that effect.... I remember dad used to talk about going to the drag races and because they used Caster Oil as a machine lubricant that even the fumes could cause your bowels to loosen.

I think the analgesic works like icy hot so all you feel is that stuff on your skin... takes your mind off the pain underneath.

Yep...proprioceptive principles. And it works good for if you have a real bad itch, a bee sting or bug bite...just place some near the area and you can no longer feel the pain or itching.

The permie forum....haven't been there in a long while. Those folks are really odd ducks...city folks very convinced they know everything there is to know about farming and they are doing it better. They spend loads and loads of money on very lush landscapes that yield a few baskets of food...but, by golly, they are doing it like a hippy should!

Even their animal paradigms are highly impractical, expensive and produce nothing...the guy who runs that forum was showing a vid on one of the BYC sister sites about a "natural" coop for chickens and it was a very small brush pile that someone had propped up a little on one side with bricks~had about 2 ft. in height and about 2x3 ft. of space in it, total. Mind you, not one bird was living in it but he was very excited about the possibilities of this coop.

Meanwhile, his own coop is this monstrosity of expensive construction that they've dragged up on some hay bales for the winter months so the poop falls through the floor...but the chickens have nowhere to be on the floor because it's all wire. And they spend more on feed than they are getting in eggs....producing nothing of real profit or value.

City folks....pish posh.

I've been on that Permies site a whole bunch! I totally agree with you that there are a whole bunch of idealist "hippy" types on there who think they can learn a bunch of stuff from books and be experts. I like floating around there for interesting ideas, but very few of them seem to be cost-effective or even practical. The intent of Permaculture is to do exactly what Bee is doing - be cost effective with down to earth useful stuff, and not spend money, use elbow grease in the most necessary time, put things together logically, and generally get back to real old-time common-sense agriculture. Unfortunately, there a few too many people who are overly idealistic, have an odd idea of logic, spend a bunch of money, and want to use their engineering degrees instead of just looking at the natural system and trying to work with it. Some get more than a little carried away. Some get a little goofy with taking shortcuts. Just enjoy the ideas, get some good laughs, and use what helps you. Some of the ideas (and very few) are actually very good. Once you fish around for a while you can figure who is loopy and who is down to earth practical.

Hi Everyone. We got a big snow fall (about 15 inches) here in VA. The chickens wanted nothing to do with the fluffy snow this morning. It's funny... it seems that the lower the hen is on the pecking order, the braver she is and more adaptable to changes. The older, dominant brahmas were the last to finally leave their roosts this morning. And they did not like it. And I pushed the rooster out at the end. The loner hen (lowest ranked) is braver than the rooster! I guess, since the loner hen gets pushed around and left out, she has handled more stress already and doesn't count on controlling things.
I guess it is the same as us humans. Through suffering and rejection, we can become stronger more adaptable.

As Bee indicated earlier, I am not worried about the end of the world. I am not "prepping" or storing up. I am living by trust in God, every day.

Made deviled eggs today for the family. they are a big hit! Now I will venture into making pickled eggs from the recipe in the old-timers, original edition of Better Homes & Garden cookbook. I am still getting accustomed to getting so many eggs (5/day).
Tomorrow I will help the granddaughters make Valentine sugar cookies! :D
