The Front Porch Swing

NOT a happy camper this morning.

The neighbor won't keep their dogs at home
OM, that's horrible. I'm so sorry. I feel it. My daughter had two pet rabbits that we thought we'd dog proofed the cage - wooden frame, welded wire. Each time they ripped through the welded wire like it was a pancake. In a leash law county, the owner said, well they're used to running and I'm not going to pen them up now. Hello!? They killed a child's pet for no reason. If they ate it, I would feel better, but they weren't hungry, just "having some fun with the pack." I did overkill on my chicken house, it looks a bit cobbled together, but it's not going to be broken into unless there's a bear.

WHAT ????? it is so incredibly easy to grow, a lot of hard work to get started correctly. But once the stand matures is virtually care free. I love it.

Still reading through.....and kicking myself for joining this sooner.

Maybe where you live? It takes three years to just get a crop from it and though it comes back every year you have to bring it indoors so it won't die in the winter? That won't work around here. We don't do things that need coddling and nursing along...life is too short for that.

Too much time and thought invested for too little reward.

I haven't gotten many eggs this winter. Didn't keep any replacement pullets last fall. A couple of bad dog problems this winter......... any way eggs finally started coming. Last week back to no eggs again! Then we got snow and I see itty bitty tracks going in and out of the barn. Set my trap and caught ........ a squirrel! Now I am getting eggs again!! Who would have thought?????

That is so funny!!!! Not funny for you, of course, but I've been telling folks that squirrels will steal their eggs and they don't listen. My dog prevents that from happening here and the difficulty of getting into the nest boxes, but I'm sure it's a free for all at places that don't have dogs. The squirrels are running rampant around here, I can only imagine who many there are where folks don't shoot them and eat them.

NOT a happy camper this morning.

The neighbor won't keep their dogs at home

And they didn't come to the house to make friendly, so you know exactly why they are there.....you now have two choices: Send a message by disappearing the dogs and also end any other dogs that show up....or...get a dog that drives off other dogs, but even then you won't have that dog up and running before these can figure out how to ransack your pens. SSS is usually the only recourse unless you have good neighbors, which I'm doubting if they won't keep their dogs at home and know you have chickens.

Fat Cochin Update: He found his crow. Yes...Mr. Metrosexual Rooster found his crow and, not only that, but he copied Toby exactly on where he used it. He stood right under my bedroom window, all by himself this morning, and crowed until I came to the window to check him out and then he stopped. Just like Toby used to do when he wanted me to come and feed. Soon as he knew I was up on my feet, he would stop crowing and walk away....and that's exactly what this rooster did!

And his crow didn't even have 5 syllables...just 2. Rer-Rrrrrrrrrrrrr! Rer-Rrrrrrrrrrrr! That's it. Very polite and low key, much like Toby's always was.

Experiment Update on the Incubation thread....I've been doing something way wrong and may have to start over.

O NO!!!! That is so wrong! Since you have pictures, I would contact your sheriff. I would say 'shoot them'.

Hurray for the rooster!! You must have a very nice window. :)

Don't give up just yet on incubating the eggs.

First thunderstorm of the season is happening right now!!!! Sure, we'll have more snow but it won't be serious...more like, "Here ya go, the last of the snow in the barrel." but it won't be full on winter time any longer.

Oh no... they are very skittish and run anytime you open the door!

Lisa :)

We have been having issues with these dogs since August. The first time they came around they killed 13 or 14 chickens. The neighbors paid me $150 for the birds and kept the dogs home... .for awhile. Then they were back around on Christmas day, but we saw them and was able to chase them off before they killed any. A couple of weeks later, they killed 2 more birds. I called and talked to the owner. She told me that I needed to build a pen for my chickens (which I do have, but don't like to keep them penned up in it), and that if I couldn't keep them in it then I needed to clip their wings so they couldn't fly out of it! She told me that her dogs were high energy and needed to run for 2 hours every day, and that they couldn't keep them penned or tied up all the time. She then told me that she "couldn't deal with the problem" and that her husband would call me back. I still haven't heard from them. I did call animal control, which told me that I had the right to shoot the dogs if they were on our property, and that they would go talk to them. So...Not sure what I'm going to do. This is definitely getting old!

Running through the front yard.......

And straight to the coop!

See... they know that they are in there!

Oh, yeah. Based on that interaction, with a human that thinks you should pen the animals on your place so that she can run her animals there to "get their exercise", you are clearly not dealing with people of normal, rational thought. Kill the dogs and never say another word. You've contacted the authorities and they gave you the green light. That's all you really need and more than most can get.

They are a breed that are very high prey drive. It's one of these that my dog, Lucy, almost killed outright when they came with the neighbor for a "visit". I think she sensed the nature of the dog and that it was very predatory....in fact, all the dogs in the neighborhood hated that dog and probably for the same reason.

It hurts to kill a dog...I know...I've done it. But it's your food supply against the predators and if that were coyotes, you'd put some lead in them for sure. These are predators looking for something to kill, be they pets or not. If their owners really cared, they would keep them at home.

Thanks Bee! I always love getting your perspective! It has always been the same as mine, and helps to reassure me that I am correct in my thinking! It wouldn't bother me nearly as bad if it was something that was killing for food, because that is just basic survival.... but these guys just kill for the sport of it, and that burns me up!

Ahhhhhhh dog problems - or no, dog owner problems!!! I am on the verge of the same thing here - yet again! A whole lot of people are just plain and simple IDIOTS. For somebody to think that you should pen your animals in one little section of YOUR LAND while their dog has free run of the rest of YOUR LAND - how stupid! That makes me so mad! I tell ya what, as Bee said, there are three possible solutions: 1) you talk to the owner and they fix the problem (hardly ever happens). 2) You kill the dogs. 3) Get a dog(s) that will take care of stray dogs. I am soooo tired of dealing with idiot dog owners and I hate to kill a dog so I plan on going with #3. Until then I am going to fire those dogs butts up and hope they will stay away, if not they will die. No more talking to neighbors who don't get it. If you do try to talk to them there's a good chance you end up fighting with them. And if anything happens to their dog YOU are to blame because YOU were the one who complained about their dog.

Sorry, this is a sore subject with me today.

Those pictures are all you need for proof. Call animal control show them the pictures and send them over to talk to the neighbors.

Take pictures every time. Call animal control every time. If there is a leash law animal control HAS to do domething about the dogs whether they damage property or not.
