The Front Porch Swing

Well, it's morning here on Oleo Acres......and now for your local news:
There was a major jailbreak in the early morning hours. Allegedly the jailer forgot to lock up the cell where 24 inmates were being held prior to their sentencing to hard labor out in the prison yard. Mr. and Mrs. Blooie were asleep when the jailbreak occurred. "We were awakened by strange scratching noises about 2:30 am. My husband got up to check and stepped in something warm and slimy." Mrs. Blooie reported. "He flipped on the light in the hall and saw the inmates scurrying for cover." Bravely, armed with nothing more than bare feet and hands, the Blooies managed to round up most of the escapees. One nefarious character, a troublemaker known only as "Easter Egger", evaded the authorities and escaped immediate capture by hiding behind a large plastic bucket full of toys. The Blooies' English Setter, Molly, once again proved her worth as she slammed into a point and managed to distract the inmate long enough for Mr. Blooie to sneak up from behind and wrestle Easter Egger into submission. All inmates have been returned to their cell, accounted for after a headcount. "There's some minor damage," Mrs. Blooie said. "Mostly squishy piles and some snags in the hallway carpet from their scratching activities, but nothing we can't clean up. We will rebuild the jail so that this never happens again."

And for your local weather:
Wyoming is living up to it's billing as the "4 Season State" - those seasons being Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Getting Ready for Winter. A cold front bringing winds that could gust to 45 MPH (just barely breezy by Wyoming standards) will sweep through the Big Horn Basin beginning this afternoon, bringing with it 1 to 3 inches of new snow. But take heart, Wyoming. The National Weather Service has declared August 15th as Summer Day 2014, so get out there when it arrives and celebrate.

In sports:
In conjunction with the winds expected today, folks in the region will take part in the "Try to Stand Upright in this Crap" games. Last week's competition was stiff, but there were no winners so all the participants from the last event will try once again for the title, "LeadButt". We are anticipating a large turnout.

Okay....that does it....you need to write on the Dave Leghorn murder mystery. I've neglected to finish the mystery and I have a great ending in mind, but I've not had the time to put it all together. I have a feeling we could get a few more good laughs from you on that thread before I finish it up.

You'll have to read the entire thing from beginning to end to keep up with the story lines...some are VERY funny, some are not, but you have to have the big picture before you can truly tie your story line into the original theme....that's my challenge to you: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-murder-mystery-of-epically-punny-proportions

I'm glad to report that all chicks are happy, healthy and scratching around this morning!
We had some freezing rain this morning, so school was delayed 2 hrs. Unfortunately, I didn't really get those extra hours of sleep because the school board called at 5:30 to say school was delayed, and then at about 7 the dogs started barking.... The neighbor's dogs were back over here, and I didn't get a chance to get the gun before my dogs had them ran off! The dane and the heeler at least.... the yorkie didn't get out of the bed. LOL.... I guess he's getting lazy in his old age! No harm done this time, thank goodness!

Ratchet (heeler) and Zauk (great dane)

GOOD DOGS! I hope you really encouraged that behavior! It would be wonderful if you could put those dogs on a wireless system around your coops so they can do their jobs day and night...sounds like they would be good at it!

Don't mind me I'm the one rolling in hysterics on the porch!
You have got a talent girl!

We got 5 in. of the prettiest snow you ever saw yesterday and last night. I awakened to a world dressed in white stillness..then walking out into it I could feel the warm air of spring laughing at winter's last gasp. The sun is coming out and melting all this lovely snow...it's gorgeous!

I hope you all are having a lovely day!!!

My heating pad brooder design is performing well in the 20-30s night and morning we had, showing 98* under the brooder, so I'm excited to test it out with chicks. I'm having fun building this smaller size brooder in the coop. It will be sunny and a fun place for chicks with a hobbit house brooder, a miniature FF feeder and nipple bucket. They are going to have a ball climbing the little hobbit hill! I'll do a vid and pictures when I get it done and have chicks to put inside of it....I feel like a little girl with a dollhouse!

Here's initial shots before placing the hay bales and finishing out the placing of things in the brooder...it looks like a little hay bunker!

Silly Bee! Re-read what you wrote....you darn sure don't need my help with your mystery story!!

I want to write a three page rant about TSC...but I won't. Suffice to say I can't find any of them with meat chicks and even found one that didn't know what a meat chick was, when informed of what they were said they didn't know when they would get them, nor how many they would get, because one never knows when chicks hatch...they just come unexpectedly(said the snotty male employee dripping with sarcasm, "That's how chicks come...no one knows when they will hatch." ). Really???? I guess there are chickens out there going into labor and having these chicks individually...the hatcheries are getting progressive!

So...meat chicks may not be in the plan this spring, ladies. That would be okay but now I've got a 50# bag of horrible, sticky, nasty name brand chick feed to get rid of...my chickens are not liking it a bit. Will have to mix it into the feed very slowly, in little bits, over a long time to get rid of this unpalatable, prebagged, beige looking slop.

Instead I'll try to lay my hands on a few layer pullet chicks at the REAL feed store on April 4th.

Bummer Bee! I believe at least 99% of the people at my TSC don't know anything about chickens either. Shoot, the vets around here don't either.
