The Front Porch Swing

Just came in from tying down the dog kennel. It is warm and beautiful except we have 40 mph winds and it sounds like the house is coming down. Moved the chicks that were in the barn brooder to the outside coop today and moved the birds that were in the guest room to the barn. Since my husband is overwhelmed right now with fencing for the cattle and finishing a gun for a customer, I ordered a base coop building from an Amish company. They will come build the building on my site and we will do the interior. I have bought supplies for expanding my original coop and we have not been able to get it done. The stuff has gone into different projects. Don't have a specific date for delivery and build. It all depends on the weather. I have some good ideas for the interior after reading about Blooie's coop and seeing all Bee's suggestions. I will be putting that info to good use. We are also getting a run-in shed for the cattle from the same guy. That will be pre-built and I should have it by the end of the week. We were blessed to come into some unexpected money from a pension that my husband earned many years ago and that gave me the means to do these things. Doug has asbestosis from being in the Navy on Submarines and his breathing is very compromised. He works very hard but cannot work very fast. This will be the best way for us to go.
Took pictures of the GP's today and will try to figure out how to post them on this thread tonight. The pup is so cute.

Speaking of bedrooms.....(like how I did that?).....TADA - The catch and release project is done! The girls (and Charlie) are outside! Had a glorious morning for it - bright, sunny, no wind, and temps in the 40's. Thank you Lord! Took the first bunch out 4 at a time. One of them jumped right out, but the others looked over the edge for a few minutes. I had to physically take them out of the moving box. Then I took the rest of the chickens out. They were really hesitant at first, like we expected they would be. But last I checked they were all over the place in there.

New vent is in..I guess I told a fib. It isn't 24"x24"... not sure how big it is, but it's not that big. I was thinking he'd bought the first one we looked at. Ken took measurements on both the west and the north walls, trying to figure out where the best place for a new window is. But then he peeked in at them and they were basking in the patch of sunlight coming in from the window, so I think he's going to add another small opening in that East wall too. Not going to be much left of it - vent, people door, pop door and opening, but we'll see what happens.


"This is a trick, isn't it? As soon as we pop out, you're gonna stuff us back in here! Florabelle, come back!"


"Alright, who did that? This was a clean floor in our brand new home two minutes ago!"

And here comes Rose. She changed her mind right quick when she realized a sneak attack was impossible. That big, light colored girl in the sunshine is Jane the Evil.

I don't see the boy from KY that is no doubt an avid hunter as disturbing at all. The girl above him from the West Bank with the "shrine" picture of a brother or somebody is very disturbing. I wonder what he did with the guns he is holding in his picture and who had to die for him to earn a shrine" picture??? "Shrine pictures" are hung in the house in that part of the country for somebody that died fighting in the name of their religion.

Can't wait to see your new coop and run in shed! And your GPs....I think GP pups are among the cutest of all the dog breeds. They are so hard to resist!

Give your good man a hug for me and tell him that I appreciate what he has sacrificed for our country...that's a huge sacrifice and I have seen the results of it. Please tell him it means so much!

So, is he a gunsmith? My middle son is contemplating going to school for that and is doing scouting on job possibilities in that field.

Yep...I agree!

That one room with the lady with just the eyes showing was a little freaky....how could you sleep with those eyes staring down at you?

Gunsmithing is a dying art. We have a forge that is close to being operational as well so learning smithing is also a possibility. If he would be interested please PM me. He does everything from the barrels to the complete stocks.(and we are only 40 miles from WV. )

He's 24 and he is what I call a "gun nerd".....absorbs all the information about guns he can and loves to work on guns, loves the history of guns, etc. We were just looking at gunsmithing schools here in WV and found a couple. We didn't know if gunsmiths still offered apprenticeships without the applicant first having the schooling. He got a Mosin Nagant the other day and I've heard of nothing else since...I now know all the history of the Mosin Nagant.

I also now know that stripper clips have nothing to do with exotic dancers.....thank goodness!

He just got offered a really good job in what he is currently doing, so don't know if that will put his gunsmithing dreams on hold. How close are you to Marietta, OH?

I cannot believe that it took your husband that long to get disability!!!!! That just steams my grits!

When you think there are people out there working the system and getting it for absolutely nothing(my BIL, who hurt his ankle while climbing out of a tree stand, lied and said he did it on military time, and is not not only rocking a disability for it, but still working at another job that pays tons of money, and the military is also paying for his schooling, plus, plus, plus).

My Dad was crushed between two trucks while in Korea, broke several vertebrae which fused on their own due to no treatment for them, and has had life long problems with it as well as PTSD, finally got approved for his Veterans disability...at the age of 83.

It amazes me that the country I love so much - which asks so much of her young men and women - can be so slow and callous when it comes to taking care of them.

Thanks for all the good words on the coop. Bee, Ken came up with a brilliant idea (well, I think it's brilliant) for the troublesome north and west walls....heat registers! Going down to the Habitat Restore as soon as he comes back in and pick up several of them. We'll install them in the upper walls, then in the winter when it's really blowing hard all we have to do is turn the little wheel - the one that opens and closes the heat registers, to limit the wind coming in. We'll attach screening to the inside to keep nasties out. I think this could work!!! If it does I'm going to stick it in the My Inventions forum! And I'm so glad that you decided to keep your experiment with incubation going...we're all pulling for you!

Mamma, I'm anxious to see the puppy photos too! It's great that you're going to be able to get so much building done! The Lord does work in mysterious ways - just a mention of your husband's gunsmithing, Bee's son's interest, the closeness of your places, and WHAM - an amazing young man's career may be launched and your husband gets some much needed assistance. WOW!

Okay, off to the Humanity Restore! Keep your fingers crossed that they have some in!
