The Front Porch Swing

A while back it got so ugly in the Oregon thread some members were accusing others of being drunk, and not in a friendly kidding way. Now the thread is dead. There is some back story there which makes their comments even more cruel and unnecessary, but boy were they stubborn. They refused to back down until they had driven their target ... and everyone else ... away.

Yes, I think you should do a simple one page outline on the streamlined version. I missed a lot of the middle of it.

I mentioned on the other FF thread about raising mangle beets for fodder in place of some grains. Here's an article on it.

Yes, I should, shouldn't I?

Ha, kind of like how "put feed and water in a bucket, stir, wait, feed it to your chickens" turned into more than one huge long thread ...

Yes, kind of like that. That is the nature of an experiment, where you start with a theory and then find ways to do it better as you go along until you've got it down to the simplest form of the equation and have it still work.

The problem with all of that are the folks that enter on the last act that weren't there for the beginning, didn't add to the process and showed up at the end all bewildered about what has just happened....but are too busy to read the evolution of the idea. No matter that one has spent hours and hours of their life to document the process and have written on all those pages, somehow the pages have become too much work to read. So, then they want you to re-write the whole process again, only the abridged version....like a summary of the experiment...but that summary was included in the pages of the original experiment and then repeated a thousand times...but they still want you to write out more summaries for each person who enters the thread because they simply do not have the time to read.

My theory about all that is this: If you really want to learn about a method, you will do the reading, just as I did the reading for the original research. If merely curious but having no intentions of doing the experiment, then you probably won't read but that's okay because you weren't intending to do the method anyway, so nothing is lost if you do not read from the beginning.

Somewhere, somehow, a person has to put their foot down and say, "No, I'm not writing that anymore...sorry...go read."

I think that is primarily what discourages me from writing a book on all this...if a person won't even read 100 pages of information because it takes up too much time, how in the world will they get through a whole book? Unless it's just a picture book with short, attention grabbing captions, I don't know how it will grab their short attention spans long enough to deliver the goods.

Hey there! Can I squish between the two of you on the swing? I'm just not in the mood right now for a bucket. I'm tired. Seems there is dissention (did I spell that right??) in the state of Texas on BYC. It makes my heart hurt when others are hurt intentionally. This is supposed to be a place where you can just be...if you don't want to do anything but lurk, that is fine. If you want to ask questions, great! If you have the knowledge and want to answer these questions...fine as well. If you want to dream, well, then dream on. Just because you dream, doesn't make you a bad person. And if you don't like people dreaming or lurking or asking questions, then go on your way. That's what I think. Haters to the left....
I'm just going to grab me a cold glass of sweet tea and have me a bite of whatever that is on the table-looks good-and listen to some funny stories.
Melanie

I've heard about that happening on the TX thread quite a few times and it surely is sad but it seems to happen everywhere on these forums now and again....like cycles of the moon or something.

Okay, here is one I could use your communal advice about ... I put an ad on CL for duck eggs as I seem to be having a lot of those lately ... I got a reply from someone saying she is worried about health risks, and is there anything she should be asking me about the eggs as she doesn't want to harm her baby and this is the first time she's though about buying fresh eggs.

I feel a little ... underqualified! ... to even answer this question.

So far I just answered that some people are allergic to either chicken eggs or duck eggs but not the other type of egg; and everyone has personal opinions about farm-fresh foods ... some people prefer them, some people don't. and We are very happy to share our eggs with people who prefer to buy the farm fresh.

Do I need a lawyer and a new liability clause on my insurance?

I think I'd be telling her that if it causes her that much concern it's probably best if she sticks with store bought eggs and leave it at that.

It only takes a few to kill a thread, I've found. It only took a few to kill a whole sister site here on BYC...the SufficientSelf forum was once a thriving, bustling and informative community but they let a few bullies take over and now it's dead as a doornail. And it just can't be revived as long as those people are there....and they are still there.

That wasn't directed towards you, Dear.

Or anyone here, for that matter.....I just get a little cranky on the threads when someone complains about the length of the thread and the other day someone suggested they even delete the big FF thread because it was too long for them to read! Delete 2 yrs of hard work because someone is too lazy to read!!!!
th.gif
That tends to get my tail in a knot. I'd like just once for these types to devote time into a thread that long filled with as much research and feedback as that one contains and then have people complain to them about how it should be deleted because they are too inconvenienced to read! Just once.....

Some people are such jerks.

I remember how we settled a small problem on this thread..... we all decided to ignore the "problem".........

I totally missed it!

I think the idea of making indexes to those great threads is fabulous ... presuming that is even possible. But that also takes effort and I'm not sure it's fair to ask the people doing the bulk of the contributing of info and question answering to also be the ones to do the indexing ...

I remember there was one great thread here that I was in the process of reading through when the brats came along and ruined it and it was shut down, so I never got the satisfaction of posting my "Hey! I finished reading now I'm ready to discuss!" post.

Part of this could be solved if BYC had a better search function, and if some posts could be "flagged" as especially useful.

There are a lot of strong women on this thread.......

Who think a lot alike........

It would take someone really nasty or obnoxious to cause a big problem on this site. And if need be, we can always call on our friends the moderators.

This thread is much to informative/loving/caring/helpful for us to just stand back and allow anyone to ruin it!.
