The Front Porch Swing

If you don't hear from me tomorrow it is because Central Ohio has blown to the Atlantic Ocean..

We just came in from un-tarping the temporary dog run and bringing the new dogs onto the back porch. The wind was lifting the whole enclosure off the ground. Winds are predicted to 30Mph tonight. I hate wind. It gives me headaches. These are outdoor dogs and not housetrained. I put puppy pads down hoping at least the pup will get it and not mess all over. It is supposed to be nice tomorrow with only 6mph winds. I can live with that. We bought all the fencing for the cattle pasture today so tomorrow is fence building day. I have never done electric fence so it should be a learning experience for Doug and me. We should get the Highland Heifers by Tuesday. I am so excited. A real farm at last. This weekend is going to be very busy.

Your right on top of things again, Blooie. You beat me to the reply.
In Wyoming, they don't even put out the high wind warnings until sustained winds of 35mph, that is usually winds gusting to 50/55mph. At 45 mph they shut down the interstate for light and high profile vehicles.
When we moved out here to Wyoming, my husband was working on the eastern plains of Colorado, but we knew he would be in Cheyenne at the end of that project, so I moved out here. Didn't know a soul within 1000 miles. We had a bunch of stuff stacked along the garage after unloading the truck into the house. The next weekend, second weekend of May, we had a storm blow threw. WE only got about 1 - 1 1/2 inch of sloppy rain/snow, but the winds were gusting up to about 100 mph. I checked the next morning and we had a lot of stuff blow away. As I was talking to DH and telling him that I lost my compost tumbler I looked out the window and said" hold on, I think I see something down the prairie". I pulled out the binoculars and spied my compost tumbler about a mile away up against a fence. So I goes out on my ATV, to retrieve that big ole, barrel and everything else that got caught up in the fence. took 2 trips to bring it home and PUT IT IN THE GARAGE. not much goes outside without being tied down.

BEE you are home!!!!

We missed you! How was your trip? Did the eggs survive?

Lisa :)

I missed you guys too!!! All I could think of was how many pages behind I'd be once I got back!

God took a hand in the survival of those eggs and prompted me to take them when I was thinking of leaving them behind.....and the electric went off while we were gone. And, not only that, but the Lord helped me maintain the exact temp for the 4 hr trip so there was no variation in the temps in all that time!

And He kept me from stumbling and dropping them....and, yes, I prayed intently each time I had to carry them as I am a very clumsy person.

Yeah, what she said!! And LOOK:

A new winder.....

And a vent on the West side going in...that's Ken peeking in.

And installed....

And a new vent going in on the North side....

And installed.......

AND a much lower pop door! TADA!!! We set up a temporary pen with Molly's old x-pen in front of the people door, then after the pop door was installed and working we moved it to see what would happen. Took them all of 10 seconds to start running in and out! All we have left is the nest boxes and a run! (That piece of wood in front of it is just a scrap)

Blooie, that looks so nice and professionally done! But that cute little window is a tad smaller than I imagined, but better than no window at all! Give your hubby a big ol' hug for how beautiful it all looks! He does good work! Love the large venting above the window and the pop door looks just right.....have you decided if you will have sliding door or a flap?

We scored a large locking doggie door at the Habitat Restore for 8 bucks, and it's working great! They love it! So it goes the uppy and downy way. I agree that the window is a little smaller than I wanted, but if he put in one any larger it would have meant some reframing and he just didn't want to do that. After all he's been through already, I can't say that I blame him! So if he's happy, and the chickens are happy, then I'm happy. (He doesn't know it yet but there's going to be an addition to the people door, though!)

That is one beautiful dog!!! This thread has got a veritable Eukanuba dog show of nice looking dogs on it, doesn't it?

Like Ben....so beautiful!

That one's easy....there is an adhesive called Liquid Nails. Apply liberally to that panel and then tape your panel on the door until that glue dries. The panel will never come off again. Ever. In a million years.

Welcome to the Porch!

So nice to have another nurse on the Porch. I'm hatching for the first time too, so we can be hatching buddies.

Eli is such a boy...didn't tell me much but I could tell he was pleased as well. Said he could even do farm chores up there....he LOVES doing farm chores. His only regret is that he won't have more days to devote to learning with Doug, as this is what he really wants to do. You'll like Eli...he's steady and he's good to have around. Great sense of humor and great work ethic. God has brought this opportunity into his life and also you godly people and I am so grateful for it!

I'll have to do some major subtracting in my chicken math before I hatch out anymore after I get those WRs....IF I can even get them now. The opportunity might have already flown. But my little coop is stressed to the max with meat chicks, then these coming along...and then later if I get the WRs. I'm expanding this spring but even that won't hold all this overstocking....I'll have to sell some of these that I'm currently hatching out and, of course, the meaties will be in the jar by the end of June.

Too bad Eli can't get up there any sooner than he can....that boy can build FENCE, now! He once sunk telephone poles into the ground for me 4 ft. deep to form part of my fence!

He needs the exercise and fresh air, so I do hope he can get up there in time to help you all do some farming.

Bee. We are really excited to meet him.. No farm chores during learning time. He will have little enough time to absorb all Doug has to teach. We have tried to teach other young men ,
but the work ethic isn't there. I really hope this works out. Now, does that boy have a special meal he likes? Cause meals come with the lessons.

Um.....you might wanna take a look at that boy before you offer to feed him.
hide.gif
He was born 10 lbs and I've been feeding him with a grain shovel ever since then...... he eats gunpowder for breakfast and casings for lunch.
gig.gif
If he pulls up and a big, blue ox jumps out of the truck, don't be surprised.

Guess the chickens won't be getting so many leftovers then. Been trying to find a way to clean out the fridge!

He said his favorite meal is fried taters and deer meat. I told him I doubted whether they had such fare at your house but he'll pretty much eating anything, really. He's very excited about all this....he can't stop talking about some kind of gun conversion and about a different shell casings for military rifles to make them less heavy.....don't know what he's saying as my eyes glaze over in the first 20 seconds, but I'm sure Doug will know all about it and can teach him the whys and wherefores.

Blooie, what elevation are you at? Up here at 7400, I think the ventilation you have would be just fine. You have a window on the south, right? That will give you some warmth during the winter, and the one on the east will start the chickies day off as early as possible to maximize the daylight for egg production. Now, you are quite a bit north of me, so a little less intense sun during the winter (lower angle in the sky) but I think that little coop will do pretty well. I think you said you are going to put the roost in front of the south window.

My jaw dropped at that one. Maybe someone's trying to tell them something.
hide.gif

Er. I think I'm not going to tell you that I've done it three years in a row.

I've no electricity in the chicken house to do otherwise. I wish the chick rush happened in May instead of March.

I hope you're feeling better Bee! I hear there's a trip involved as well. Stay safe!

I love cardamom. I had some Jordanian friends years ago who introduced me to arabic coffee and every time I smell cardamom it reminds me of their incredibly rich coffee - they put cardamom in it.

Hiyas! I slept through our storm yesterday, but not the one this morning. Creek rose up - there's an old bridge post you can see just outside our windows and when it gets up to the 4th brick from the top, we know we've had some serious rain. In about 3 hours the creek went up 2.5 ft.

We scared a BIG garter snake yesterday, he must have been sunning on the bank under the porch - we saw him slithering downstream trying to go against the current. He couldn't make it, but he did reach the dead tree across the creek and crawled up inside to a vantage point where he could give us his baleful glare until we stopped watching and he disappeared. When I say big, about 2-3 ft long, which is huge for a garter snake. I love their racing stripes!
Hi, oh okay. Oh wow that's a lot!

That is really big for a garter snake!

Well....looks like I'll be picking up a 3 yr old, intact male, GP tomorrow evening. I'm a little leery about it all....sounds like he hasn't been trained on anything at all. Not a good time for my back to be acting up, but I'm going to ask God to help me with this dog, since He's the one that led me to it in the first place. He sounds like he has just had owners that weren't too on the ball, if you know what I mean?

The guy said he thought this dog would attack Jake..... as if I would ever let that happen.
roll.png
Don't folks know they have control over such things? Sounds like this dog just needs a leader.
