Bee, stoopid question - will a seed starting pad work in place of a heating pad for brooding chicks?  No, I'm not getting any more for quite some time, but I was curious.

Shoulda used chocolate frosting, woulda worked better. LOL

I guess that depends on how warm it got and if that was adequate for the type of chicks you have. CX get by with much less heat than other chicks, so DPs and toy breeds might need more heat than they do.

On composting, I take the shavings out of the coop, put it in a chicken wire bin.  I throw my vegetable/fruit peelings, etc on top.  Come Spring or Fall when I do my gardening, I put what is in there on the garden.

I remember a while back Jake had fleas and you had a tough time getting rid of them. What finally worked? I have not had fleas since we moved out of town 9 years ago and now all the sudden they are popping up. DH said he has had 3 land on him. Thanks for any suggestions.

.. I'm enjoying it all. still trying to figure out how to quote multiple postings and respond to them.
Ms Jellybean, don't go anywhere, the world is full of crabby mean people, just shake their blah, blah, blah out of your ears, ( or eyes in this case) and don't use one more minute of your time on them. Life is to short and to precious to waste on other peoples negative energy.
Blooie have you ever considered putting a book together with all your dads words of wisdom? I love that kinda thing. I think I would enjoy your dad very much.
Looks like we will be "normal" here in Wi this week for the first time in about 5 months. ( weather wise that is) I can finally see the ground in my garden. It is a glorious site.
When I read about what some of you warm weather folks are doing already I am jealous. Happy for you, but still a bit jealous.
I like the drunk composting link. thanks. I forwarded it to my aunt who is completely stressing out over how to compost correctly. I never really put that much worry into my compost,

I figured it will eventually rot and become compost. Isn't that some kind of law of nature? things live, they die, they decompose, they feed other living things???
I have added dirt, manure, and water from time to time to keep it moist. it seemed to help. i have also seen compost starter for sale. Has anyone used that? Maybe I would be more successful if I put a little more thought into it.

I finally let Katy off lead this morning when we were marking property lines for the fence. We had The Pup loose too. She took off running for the woods leaving the whimpering pup behind. I didn't know if she would come back. She did after about 15 minutes, then up our lane she went. Now our lane is about 700 feet straight up to the road. When we went up in the truck with the pup to get some equipment she was exploring around the old barn. As soon as she heard the pup she jumped in the truck. The ride back down was a bit crowded lol. When we got back to the pasture she took off with the pup and headed straight for the creek which is down a steep embankment. Of course the puppy fell in and couldn't get out. Doug had to climb down to rescue him. Katy was sitting in a pool of water just watching. I carried a wet and tired little boy home to his kennel. She followed and they are both having an afternoon nap after their adventure.. I think she knows where she lives now and is happy here. We really love both of them. They are sweet. I just hope she learns to watch the cattle or I will have a huge feed bill for a freeloader. Everybody around here earns their keep.

Compost. I love composting!! It is like growing a garden....without lifting a finger! I put all sorts of stuff in mine...a 5' fence wire circle. Leaves, cut grass, kitchen scraps...the things the chickens don't get. Well, now they want the grass clippings, as well as some of the kitchen scraps. So now, when I clean out the deep litter, it all goes in to one of the compost piles. I usually have 2 going. One for fresh stuff. One that is finished and can go into the gardens. I even taught my new husband about composting. He likes it now.
