The Front Porch Swing

And time to train Gust as a Livestock Guardian Dog!!! Maybe you can catch the coon, kill it then throw it and throw it and throw it until Gust gets the idea that coos are toys. And, until killed, they are self "throwing", much better than a Frisbee :D .

I wouldn't even let Gust come investigate with me. I'm so protective of him!

I think Gust would enjoy helping. When we are out playing frisbee he likes to bring me field mice. He got a gopher the other day. He once vomited up a whole mole for me when I was wiping his paws after a good run. He hasn't brought me a chicken. Yet.

Morning all,  great day in La.    Hope your's is too.  Last night I gave my babies a treat.   They have only had fermented chick starter for 3 wks.  I mushed up a handfull of boiled chicken, peeled green grapes and egg whites.  When I put the plate down they rushed up.  Stopped dead.   Looked at it. Looked at me.  One of my bigger golden comet's decided to have a little peck.  Then another.  When the rest came forward to share she threw her leg up to stop them from getting to the treat.  They would sneak in a peck and run like crazy.  She didn't get much more because she was running around trying to keep them away.  I laughed so hard.   I just love my babies so much.   A lot of joy in that brooder.   It's about  7 ft long and they run and fly constantly.   Happy, happy babies.   :love

You PEEL green grapes for them? That's going above and beyond for sure.

I read about someone with old oversized army surplus pressure cookers for road-kill type animals. Though I appreciate the frugality ... and have eaten some odd things myself ... it gives me pause. :p

I have cooked many critters for my chickens. Possums, coons, a rabbit that wouldn't stay out of my garden, perch from a day at the lake, squirrels that were stealing chicken feed. Free protein and they love it.

Considering what they charge for fish meal ... !!!!!! It would feel very satisfying to feed a raccoon back to the flock. Maybe if we do catch him I could boil it in the turkey scalding pot. Except I don't want to gut it.

We need to find out if killing raccoons is even legal ...

I'm investigating manure composting in the chicken run for the bug proteins. We got a trial scoop of cow manure the other day ... just had it dumped over the fence at the bottom of their run. The first two days the birds were scared of it ... wouldn't go near it even when I scattered scratch in it. And I was starting to question my idea because cow manure doesn't smell so nice and the run is right outside the kitchen windows. But on day 3 the birds were down there scratching away at the little pile.

This reminds me ... probably time to do a flavor check on the eggs.

Here is my reply from your thread.... LOL

I am not an expert hatcher But lots of people talk to Sally Sunshine Who wrote the bottom article.

There are soo many factors I have read online here and other places. My one and only hatch had so many things going wrong with it from the get go.... All Pullet eggs, No idea of how old they were, First time hatcher (me) brand new incubator 1588. Two types of eggs went in the incubator.... Chicken and guinea... chickens take 21 +- days to hatch and Guineas take 26+- days to hatch. Guineas take more humidity at lock down.

I stopped the turner for all during lock down for the chickens and just kept the guineas in there.... I did NOT open the incubator but about three times during the whole process. ITs very very dry here. I had six chicken eggs and five Guinea eggs. I had three Guineas hatch. I am the recipient of beginners luck on stuff.... I consider that hatch to be incredibly successful.

I don't skin or gut anything, it all goes in the pot whole. I was gutting a squirrel one day when I realized that feeding the raw guts to the chickens was stupid! Talk about expozing chickens to things that I shouldn't :(

So I googled a few things and somewhere I found info that said pathogens and parasites completely cooked stops any danger for feeding that kind of stuff to chickens. I also put whole corn or oats or barley in the crock pot for about 3 hours on my day off and make them "soup". I feed them the cooked grain and pour the water from the cooking over layer feed. My chickens love me.

All this talk about bbq'd coon made me hungry. A pot of white beans seasoned with country ham and onion, some cornbread and fried chicken - anybody want some?
