The Front Porch Swing

Have had computer issues so it took me awhile to catch up. Blooie, I love the runs! For those of you who like roasted veggies, have you tried roasting beets? Cut the tops off leaving a short portion and trim the root. wrap in foil and bake at 350* for about 25 minutes. A sharp knife should easily pierce them. Unwrap and rub the skin off with a paper towel. They are sooo good, not like canned beets at all.
After I roast them I slice em and put them in a container with vinegar. Sometimes with the same vinegar I use for the onion quick pickel. Or Hardboiled eggsies. Great for easter.

Ooh Ohh annnd taking those eggs out before the Pickled Beet juice colores the Yolk.... and turning them into devulied eggs. Pickled whites with bright yellow stuffin is something to see and eat.

My goodness! I expected to hit the porch for my iced tea and spend an hour catching up! Everyone's been pretty quiet, I guess.

Ibejaren, I feel so bad for you. I know you're really upset, and I sure understand why. I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but the truth is I don't know what to say. Would a hug help, maybe a little?

Aww, Leslie...that stinks! Got your .22 handy? I'd sure be willing to pop a shot or two off at him!

Are you ready for the great unveiling? Well, TADA:

The people door, almost finished.

People door tanding open while Ken devises the tunnel.

And the "tunnel" from the pop door into the run. It looks open, but as you can see Ken's screwdriver/drill is sitting on top of the chicken wire which is covered with hardware cloth.

You can't see that almost all of the hardware cloth is down around the coop and most of the run - still need to put it around the "front", the door, and the tunnel. And no batter boards yet, but they are cut. Just had time to pick up tools and scraps before the wind started howling and rainddrops started falling. So we're taking tomorrow off, since we've got snow in the forecast. But I'm pretty doggone pleased with it. Ken's tunnel is genius! I couldn't figure out how to accomplish it, and he just cobbled it together! It's strong and stable, and open at the top so I'm pretty sure the girls (and Charlie) will take to it much better than they would have liked my idea of a totally enclosed box.

I am so sorry for your loss.

It stinks but I have too many birds to know all of them as pets. I feel worse for them than me. They love to free range and now they can't ... Also when the raccoons come to stare at the chicken through the hardware cloth just before dawn the birds freak ... I hate to see them so upset.

If I had better hands and eyes I'd go get a gun right now. I can't believe the coyote came here for Lunch! It was 1 pm. Middle of the day. I could put a chicken in a cage in the middle of a field and wait.

That's a beautiful set up. Lot of hard work went into it. Nicely done!

Is that usual? A coyote in the middle of the day? We get them early dawn and middle of the night.

I KEEP on trying beets every few years and EVERY time, they just taste like dirt to me. I am hoping some day my taste will change since they are sooooooo good for you!

Saw a coyote run off with one of my chickens today. I'd let them out to free range.

Raccoon traps were empty this morning.

I really want more fencing.
I am so sorry

Wow, this looks really great!!!!!

Hey everyone! I've been super busy washing laundry and cleaning up lately, but some stuff has come up, making me incredibly worried about leaving home.

First off, one of my dogs has been finding eggs and eating them. I had a nest if eggs that my Swedish duck had been laying eggs in and I found the shells yesterday in the yard. It wasn't my big dog because she would crush an egg with her bigger mouth. I'm looking at my rat terrier mutts now.

I am so disappointed. Before, they would occasionally find eggs and would just hold their prize in their mouth and walk around. If I saw them, I'd snap my fingers, they'd slowly put down the egg, and then lay down on their bellies and roll over, knowing I wasn't pleased with them. Now. I have to seek out the dog soon it while they are in the act and give them a spanking.
I am so sorry, I don't know how to help at all,
