The Front Porch Swing

I had to sort of cut some feathers to get it back off, just FYI. And the other birds went NUTS for it, they 'attacked' it all the time. So... maybe something less shiny?

I had put gauze over the wound and the actual tape was only attached at the ends, basically. From breast bone to between the shoulder blades, on one side.

It was pretty ghetto, didn't work super great, but it kept the wound covered from flies... she was a sad bird being all by herself indoors, so this way she got to go in the coop. Eventually I just took it off and set her loose, just caught her once a day and cleaned the wound out. It was pretty nasty for the longest time. Eventually when it grew closed I had to pull out rotten feathers that had grown inside the wound (guess the skin had folded over and healed?), also, her breast muscle had been exposed, so it had a dried layer over it, which came out in bits and pieces as well. Big stinky yuck

One of those satisfying gruesome things? Like when you have to clean a cyst or something nasty and you're just "EEEEW" and laughing at the same time? ....I'm weird.

Wouldn't have done it with some of my other birds, but she's an egg a day kind of gal and very tame (not snuggly cuddle tame, just.. doesn't mind me sticking my hand in the nest box under her butt kind of tame

). It took her several months before she layed again, but it was worth it. She's not a huge eater, so that's ok. Some of my fatty eat-a-lots would have been culled if I didn't get an egg for months while eating me out of house and home.

Ofcourse then I had a second hawk incident and she wouldn't let me treat her AT ALL. I just put her back in with the others and wished her luck. I was fully ready to cull if she didn't heal, but she healed.. started laying again this spring. Suprisingly that white rock kind of protected her from the flock, as if she knew what had happened. Really odd.

woke up to the sound of helicopters.... the property here backs up to the last lake of the Santee lakes. The copters with snorkels are doing round robins.... Every two minutes.

Right below us is the gate to the outback from the Santee lakes and the fire Marshall seems to have a group of engines there. Thats where they staged for the firestorm in 2007 The fire is working its way away from us in a canyon Where we regularly see Golden eagles. Lots of Sycamores in that canyon. There is no wind at this time... So I imagine the fire crews are pushing the fire away. If such a thing can be done.

If we have to evacuate... People first ... I will take the portable hard drive and the box of manuscripts.

There are a couple of stages for evacuation thank goodness.... first its voluntary.... We would be doing that so I can come back a couple of times...

Deb, I can't find the original post, but what is the "Brazilian" method of cooking ribs?

Sheila

Brazilian method is coating them with sea salt only wrapping in tinfoil and turning them over every hour..... for six hours. Cook temp is 275.

Saw a recipe on Allrecipes.com BRAZILIAN RECIPE

but read below that recipe in the comments section a woman from Brazil related her method...

That sounds delicious. Anything with a focus on salt is

by me!

I steamed the last ribs I did in dark beer for a while before I opened up the foil and put sauce on them. I made a BBQ sauce out of random things in the fridge I poured into ketchup, with more of the dark beer. Dad said they were the "best ribs" he'd ever had. Beginners luck, I think.

Now I want ribs.

I've never made ribs before but this sounds easy for anyone. I'll give it a try. Vegetarian son comes home for summer June 1 so I'll get the rib dinner in before that. We eat meat in front of him but we try not to look like cave dwelling carnivores chewing greasy bones in front of him. That might be sorta off putting for the poor boy.

I doubled down on these ducks...I have a brooder heater, a heat lamp, a nipple bucket (they are finally using it!) and a heated dog bowl for swimming and drinking. They have a veritable spa, fresh air and natural light as well.

I'm going to try a little broody magic if this Del broody will tolerate it...she is due to hatch on the 25th and if she has anything at all hatching out...or even if she doesn't...I'm going to slip these ducks to her in the middle of the night, keep her brood box covered and dark until I can observe interactions in the morning light. I'm praying she takes on the ducklings along with her own so I can stop worrying about them so much.

Deb, will be thinking of you and praying for you today as I chore around....please keep us informed and then you and your grandma bug out sooner than later. Well...don't need to tell you that, you are an old hand at this sort of thing, aren't you? Keep us posted?

x2 Yeah Deb, why don't you pack a suitcase and have it in the car, just in case? Can't hurt.
