I had to sort of cut some feathers to get it back off, just FYI. And the other birds went NUTS for it, they 'attacked' it all the time. So... maybe something less shiny?
I had put gauze over the wound and the actual tape was only attached at the ends, basically. From breast bone to between the shoulder blades, on one side.
It was pretty ghetto, didn't work super great, but it kept the wound covered from flies... she was a sad bird being all by herself indoors, so this way she got to go in the coop. Eventually I just took it off and set her loose, just caught her once a day and cleaned the wound out. It was pretty nasty for the longest time. Eventually when it grew closed I had to pull out rotten feathers that had grown inside the wound (guess the skin had folded over and healed?), also, her breast muscle had been exposed, so it had a dried layer over it, which came out in bits and pieces as well. Big stinky yuck
One of those satisfying gruesome things? Like when you have to clean a cyst or something nasty and you're just "EEEEW" and laughing at the same time? ....I'm weird.
Wouldn't have done it with some of my other birds, but she's an egg a day kind of gal and very tame (not snuggly cuddle tame, just.. doesn't mind me sticking my hand in the nest box under her butt kind of tame
). It took her several months before she layed again, but it was worth it. She's not a huge eater, so that's ok. Some of my fatty eat-a-lots would have been culled if I didn't get an egg for months while eating me out of house and home.
Ofcourse then I had a second hawk incident and she wouldn't let me treat her AT ALL. I just put her back in with the others and wished her luck. I was fully ready to cull if she didn't heal, but she healed.. started laying again this spring. Suprisingly that white rock kind of protected her from the flock, as if she knew what had happened. Really odd.
