Blooie glad I could make you laugh, I promise all of my chickens are single headed.
I totally agree with both Blooie and Lazy Gardener. Clothes should be practical and comfortable. Most of the time I feel a bit sloppy because of how I dress, especially when I go to school with the child I care for. All the teachers and paras are decked out with layers of fashionable clothes and dripping with jewelry. I wear jeans and make sure my top is something that will stand up to a lot of washing. I usually come home wearing some sort of body fluids. I worked with a women who popped Advil all day so she could wear her fancy shoes. BAHAHAH Never! I told her there was no way in h*!! I would ever medicate myself for fashion. Well, headed out side to plant flowers ~ bare foot in my stained shorts and t shirt. Love my life
When I was shopping for that blue dress, the last store my friend Bobi Jo (I usually just call her "Beej") went to was David's Bridal. I was uncomfortable, Beej wasn't. She wears beautiful clothes all the time, so I dragged her with me to help. I had to have this dress for a formal event Ken and I were going to, and as he has "risen in the ranks" of his fraternity the formal events are coming more often. The last formal dress I bought was my wedding dress in 1968 - and Ma and I got that at Woolworth's.
That was an interesting day....back in those days all the shopping was done "downtown". Ma and I took the bus then walked from store to store. We had a blast. Hit Penney's, Fantles, and a few dress shops, then stopped at Woolworth's for a hamburger and a shake. On a rack in the "Women's Wear" department there were a few wedding dresses and I had a "say yes to the dress" moment when I saw the one I ended up with. It was lovely, fit like it was custom made, and cost $49.00. It even came with the veil - a little pillbox number with lots of sparklies. So we ate our burger while the lady clerk wrapped it up, then we bought some nylons, some aspirin, and two guppies for my little brother. One stop shopping!
Anyway, at David's I found two dresses and I tried them both on. The silvery gray dress was gorgeous - I loved it. I came out of the fitting room and did some twirling, and was smoothing it down as I looked at myself in the mirror. Who was that woman? I kept touching it, turning to the side and giving a little tug to make it lay better over the bustline (there's half of my weight problem!).I almost hated to take it off to try on the blue one. When I came out in the blue one, I was really torn. It looked really nice too. It had a row of those little sequins edging the arm holes, hence the stiff posture in the photo because they were sticking and scratching me, but the young lady waiting on us, Abby, said those could be clipped off by the alterations department. I couldn't make up my mind. The silver one was beautiful and I loved the blue one too. Beej was no help....she tried to get me to buy them both because she couldn't choose either.
But Abby said simply, "Get the blue one." I wanted to know why - what had she seen that Beej and I had missed? She replied, "You came out of the fitting room and didn't touch the blue dress. You didn't tug, or twist, or smooth or pull. So that's the dress you want. If you try on a dress and it looks great, but you are fidgeting with it, then it's the wrong dress. You'll spend the entire evening making little adjustments you don't even realize you're making. But if you try on a dress and simply look at it without having to touch, that's the dress you'll be comfortable in all night." Yup, she was right. I didn't have to tug or smooth that dress at all, and it was almost as comfy as a long robe or nighty. So I bought that one, had the pokey little sequins removed from the armhole, and I never have to touch it again for the whole night when I wear it.
So there is such a thing as comfort in fancy clothes. I remembered that when I bought the black and white one, and it worked! I tried on 4 dresses that day, and there were only two I didn't fidget in. So I bought the one that made the girls look, um, more contained, and I have worn that one twice now. This cruise will be my first time wearing the blue one for an evening, but I'm not worried about being miserable in it. Thank you Abby, wherever you are!
But it's always a relief to come home or get back to our hotel room and change into my sweats!
