The Front Porch Swing

My son Just called. We expected him home around 3 am but as I expected the project took longer than he expected.

So backing up to Friday. Dean went to his once a week meeting for students doing data analysis for the astronomy department. He and about three others are working alongside Justin who is a Grad Student. They are analyzing data from a satellite that looks for XO planets... planets circling other stars.

During the meeting the Justin said he had to go to the Laguna Observatory to actually look through the telescope at a single star in that whole project. The planet is supposed to circle the star every 60 days and last night was it. It was a do or die mission... LOL. Up till now they have been looking at Graphs for each star coming from a Radio Telescope satellite named Kepler.

Justin needed help with the Telescope. So he invited Dean and a couple of others to come with him and be Worker Bees. So Sunday he was supposed to Pack a bag with food and drinks his own pillow and blanket and a book or game that didnt run off a computer. There is internet up there but its a special wifi run by the College and very expensive so they were told "Do NOT go online". Cell phones dont work up there either. There is a small barracks For these sessions and a room with bunk beds.

So the Plan was to do a last minute run to the college to hand in his release form. Then come back home to wait for Mathew to come pick him up. Justin wanted Dean to help him pump Nitrogen into the telescope which was a two hour process. So they were going up early to open up the observatory and prep the telescope. The others would come up later.

While Dean was at the college Doctor Welsh was there talking to Justin and he flipped out when he found out Justin had invited Dean last minute. Doctor Orosz got Dean on board to get paid for research on another project that hasn't started yet. During the conversation Dean was handed five more forms to fill out and it all took much longer than he expected.

So they got a late start and left the house about 3:00 Dean said they would be done by 2:00 AM and probably home by 3:00 AM. I was up till 4:00 am and finally gave up flipped on the porch light so he could see when he got home. He was soo excited before he left... Packed and unpacked and packed again.... Its almost eleven now and he is not home yet... I am excited to hear what he has to relate about the whole experience.

edited To correct names.... Justin is the grad student and Mathew is like Dean.

OK front porch swingers - I need some good vibes on a job application I submitted on Friday. If I get the job, I can move to the new place and live with my hubby again.
Getting really tired of this separation and need to get there to weed the flower gardens! there are so many of them there. Here are a couple pics that DH sent.

I am thinking these are day lilies ... I'm hoping for tiger lilies ... I guess I will know when they bloom.

Wyo, that's one beautiful place! Can't wait until you can get ensconced there and start exploring the possibilities. Anywhere with a barn that big has endless possibilities! Will pray for your job prospects.

Well, our sweet DIL Stephanie is on her way to Cleveland clinic for her first round of evaluations for her lung transplant. It has been a very rough weekend. She has been in the hospital since Wednesday night. Was released yesterday afternoon. She was coughing up blood, had to be put on a breathing machine for a couple of days. Weaned her off of that on saturday so she could come home. They didn't want her to miss her cleveland appointments. She is still feeling very bad and weak. I asked her if she was ready for all of this and she said not really. The first thing they will do is a PFT, pulmonary function test. She hasn't had one for several months, because they are afraid it could cause her lung to collapse again, or now the bleeding to start up. So please pray for her, for strength, for the Drs., for my precious son and their 2 equally precious children, her parents. They had an 18 year old son pass away from cf. It's going to be a long haul, and she is growing weaker quickly.

Blooie! I hope a pray your trip is going the way you dreamed it would! Be safe and have so much fun!

@heartsizedfarm, we just found out that those "Civil War era" chairs are probably not that old. The upholstery is new and there are probably some newer staples that were used for the reupholstering. That being said, the antique shop owners we consulted with were impressed with the deal we got and really liked the chairs otherwise.

Mom and I are actually really relieved. We had wanted to try our hand at reupholstering/retouching the chairs, but hadn't wanted to mess them up if they had original paint/parts/varnish. Now that we know that is not the case, I'm going to take the time and do some research on reupholstering. I'm thinking with those older chairs, I'm going to replace the cushions and the fabric. I also want to check all the legs and make sure they won't give out. There is a missing doule on one of them, so I need to replace it. Once they each get a new set of seats, I think I'm going to sand down the wood just a big and give it a tiny bit of a white wash to bring out the fabric. Mom wants to embroider something really pretty into the fabric.

I'm gonna post pics later. Mom wants original pics of them so we can fix them up again if we realize we were crazy for trying to fix them, haha!

Long day so im gonna sit by the turtles and sip some tea. Just finished chicken soup for dinner but any sweets left sitting im happy to take a nibble. Left house at just b4 8am and went few blocks over to get into line for gas which was over 5 blocks long. Got around first corner and young man in car behind me came up and started talking to me. I was pretty clueless and tried to tell him I dont speak or understand too much arabic. Called a friend who spoke to him and was told to get out of line since I was a woman and go up to the station. Well I did and man there told me go back to end of line. So I went back and they gave me my spot back. Young man was upset but I told him its ok. After awhile another man told me go to front I told him I had but was sent away. He said sorry. Well we snaked our way around and right at 11am I was filling my tank. Guys with machine guns strapped on were walking around and yet it was quiet and orderly. It was 86 degrees but we had a nice breeze and I sat watching a movie on my tablet and one of the men offered me a bottle of water. Got home and power had gone out. Girls wanted to go out but I needed a rest and after an hour we took a drive. Power was out over large portion of city and traffic is already deadly and not a single policeman guiding traffic anywhere so it was travel at own risk. Power came back at 4pm. We sat at home eating a small quart of icecream dause you know it was melting lol. Helped my youngest with her classes since im pushing her to study again. Power went out again just as we sat down to dinner so we ate by lantern. Power came back after 30 minutes. I got some pics while I was out on my phone but the download feature on this site doesnt like me lol. I did manage to get my chicks photos uploaded yesterday in my Libyan chicks album if anyone wants to guess sex and breeds. I noted the ones crowing now. Few more possible boys looking at tail feathers along the saddles. But they have small combs. Final temp was around 86 today and its not even begun to get hot yet. Libya holds world record of 126. City is around 3hours drive from me. Hope I can post more pics soon. Prayers to all who need them, welcome new folks and safe journeys to those on vacations. From the other side of the world good night.

Oh Sweet tea, most definitely! And I can't wait for her to get back because I LOVE to laugh!

My favorite things I'm raising are my two boys.
This is my oldest son, Aaron with a baby chick that hatched a few weeks ago. He's 7 and in cub scouts and loves video games.

This is my youngest son, Nic with his duck, Bumblebee. He's three and will start preschool this year. He is my Joy boy because he is usually smiling laughing, aggravating or just being silly.

Anybody else raising boys? I feel such a calling to do my best to lay a solid foundation to raise Godly and respectable young men.

Hello from somewhere nestled between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains of Virginia! I also have two boys, ages 6 and almost 4…. who just came inside for a snack after some crazy sprinkler fun! We had to do a test run before the birthday party in a couple weeks. Slip-n-slide is on for tomorrow!! Not sure where I would be without my boys!! Welcome to the porch!
