The Front Porch Swing

My heart is heavy. One of my new little chicks is hurt. I found it yesterday, limping. It's leg is skinned... mom may have stepped on it or one of the other chickens got a hold of it. I separated mom and chicks (I did NOT know she would be out and about with them so young! I thought she'd keep them away from the flock for a while). The chick was doing ok yesterday, limping, but still active.

Today, the leg is scabbed over, but the chick is weak. I don't think it's been eating and drinking. I bought some Blukote (a blue spray that disinfects and has some other stuff in it, it keeps others from pecking at it too). My fingers are a lovely shade of violet now... but the little one is getting worse. I just found it laying in the coop, mom just trampling it. She's busy with the other five. Nature doesn't have time to stop and care for the weak. But dangit, I'm a human, and humans care

I dissolved one drop of baby tylenol in some sugar water.. if it dies, atleast it shouldn't be hurting so bad. It felt cold too (I don't think mom has been brooding on it). So I stuffed it in my shirt, until I found my heat plate in the shed. It's eyes are closed, still breathing.. just laying there. Hoping the sugar water and heat perks it up some.

I said I would let nature take it's course, but dangit, I can't.

If it passes, atleast I tried.

NanaKat. I'm a Nanny Linda... Great looking white chickens. White Plymouth Rocks? The babies are what 2 wks? Mine are 13 days and almost that big.

I had my handyman call to talk about his box incubator. There is a small air hole about 1" on the side. He hatched 20 baby quail and had them in there and a snake got in and ate all 20. Of course he couldn't get back out. Killed him. He went and bought hardware cloth and put it all around and was hatching out another 50 babies and he came in and a big chicken snake was coiled up on top. Again he killed it. This has been a bad year for snakes. I'm going back out and pour some more ammonia around the pens. Better be safe.

He said there's a way to put a pin in an egg and blow it out then pierce it with a fish hook. Then taped down. The end of the fish hook has super heavy wire or something better than just fishing thread. He's a super hunter and has those big cages for mountain lions. Lots of trapping.

Absolutely!!

Lost our special needs duck today. :(. Looks like she got in the pool and couldn't get out. And I tried so hard to get the pool where it was easier accessible for her to get in and out and even watched her do it. I know things happen but I'm still sad. I hope
Her last days were pleasant on our little homestead.

The beach,   what is that?  I'm in NW La and nothing around.   Like the idea of a Margarita.     :gig

Yeah, but watch out for the blue margaritas....while I was on the cruise I was warned by a wise Porch Sitter that she drank something blue with a straw and didn't remember much after that.  Me being me, instead of avoiding that ominous sounding blue drink I had to try one.  I'd tell ya how that went, but, um, I can't remember.  Of to see doctor-man....will catch up later.  Thanks for passing on my thoughts about O Wise One.  Hey, that's how we can refer to her and not get, well, censured!

Speaking of drinks, we are setting up a small area to brew our own beer.. Any of you done this? I hear the flock love the grains.. We just started a new thread on this subject.. Please let us know
