The Front Porch Swing

Blooie, I'm so sorry to read about the assault on the kids, I know I sound like an old fart when I say it didn't used to be this bad. Makes me crazy.
Update is getting better every day. Pain is less than the day before, I'm hoping at one week I'll be able to sleep on my side again. I know I'm having a fairly easy time of it compared to some of the folks. I actually got teased a bit by a few people who didn't think I needed the surgery because I'm a "lightweight" meaning I need to lose less than 100 lbs. when I was walking the hallway in the hospital with some of the other folks who were larger, I'm glad I didn't wait until I was no longer a lightweight. You could hear them in their rooms being sick. I promise after this surgery that is NO fun. I've done it once as a result of taking pain meds and I won't do it again!

I went to the doc the first time when I was 217 at 5'3". This morning I was at 204. I'm still struggling a little bit to get 60 grams of protein and 60 oz go water every day. I've found the tomato soup protein drink does not sit well in my tummy any more. I'm on liquids until July 30. I'll keep everyone up to date.

Is greek yogurt considered a liquid? It's high in protein.

Oh my goodness getting the first milestone under two hundred you will be hooting for joy. 60 grams each... how many calories does that cal.... Omg... you are on 240 calories per day. Thats half of what is designated a starvation diet.... Thank goodness its temporary right? just while the stomach heals....?

I am very interested in your progress... I am a heavyweight... at 5'7" and a little under 400. And hoping when obamacare finally gives me my paperwork they will allow me to do the surgery. I cannot go any higher.... I cant....

Deb,

I hit 200 this am. :) the liquid diet is temporary to allow the stomach to heal. since the surgery I've logged July 11, 260 calories 61 grams of protein, Sat July 12 370 calories and 79 grams of protein, Sun 448 cal 74 g protein. The protein is key as that is what helps your body heal. The 60 ounces of liquid a day is to prevent dehydration. That part is critical for me as i already have low grade kidney disease. All of my little incisions are now pain free, it is just the large one where they took the stomach out that is still painful when I first stand up and I cannot lie on my side yet. :|

It's gonna be a bit different when you eat. Your blender will be your friend. 60 grams of protein a day is a very good estimate. Think potted meat for a bit. Blend it up and add to mashed potatoes. It's good. Rice is good for this also. How about something that gives you a boost like Boost. I'm sitting at 218 down from 265 a year and a half ago. The very BEST way to fail at this is sugar drinks. Look up Red Zero drink and also pkgs of Crush to add to water without the sugar. I lost my first 25 lbs by giving up cola and bourbon. Sugar sugar. Finally I went the lowcarb way and nada. Low cal way nada. The only way I could restart my metabolism was to eat only whole veggies, some fruit, 75 g protein and 1 serv of rice or potatoes. The Perfect Health diet. com Good luck

I'm not in the ball park with you wonderful ladies, I've been loosing the same 20# for the last 30 years! But, I've found, for me, that when I just simply add an extra serving of fruit or veggies, I loose weight. My problem is that I lack the discipline to do that. It's so much easier to grab a packaged snack, or a handful of chips which leads to more. Unfortunately, my (gasp) diabetic husband is a junk food junkie, and continues to buy that stuff. If I did ALL the grocery shopping, that stuff would be a rarity in my kitchen. I thank God for the miracles of modern medicine, or I'd have been a widow 20 years ago.

Dpenning, sounds like you are making wonderful progress. Also sounds like you were in an excellent facility with an excellent barriatric program. I think that's crucial, to have a surgeon who does the surgery often, not someone who does it occasionally along with all of the rest of her/his varied medical practice.

Linda,

The whole process is different! :) They have a very detailed diet for each stage and I have been militant about following it to the letter. I also meet with a nutritionist. In addition to the eating guidelines they have guidelines for supplements to take to ensure you are getting everything you need. Not something the doc sells, they just tell you what to look for and you can buy them wherever. Anything sugar is a nono.

Gardener,

I did the lose the same 20 for years... problem was i was gaining 2-3lb each year in addition to the yoyo diet. It is an interesting process for sure. I went through the nicholsonclinic.com. they have patients from all over the country. Probably because they are so good at getting it covered by insurance. It is somewhat like an assembly line but very well run.

Woke up with the worst headache and sore throat! My head in throbbing and my throat hurts so bad. Put a whole chicken in my big soup pot as soon as I got home from dropping my son off at preschool. Now will let that cook and make the noodles while the daycare kids nap. I love chicken noodle soup, but this is the worst headache :( the good news is I can use up the broccoli and some collards from the garden in the soup.
