The Front Porch Swing

Oh I wish I had produce like that. My garden isn't growing much of anything.

Well, this is the first year we've had a garden this good. I think the temps have been on the cool side with rain at just the right time. Someone told my DH that this is the best weather for greenbeans, but not so good for tomatoes. Our tomatoes aren't doing very well. We haven't had a good tomato crop for several years. Greenbeans had very little bug bites, and the corn so far hasn't had any worms or bugs. We planted sunflowers in between corn patches. I think that keeps a lot of bugs out of our garden. Not sure about that, but we had the same results last year with the corn planted with sunflowers. They are so pretty in the garden.

My husband busted his knee at work, wet floor: leg went one way, he went another. They had to cut him open to reattach things and remove any fragments... he's 320lbs. Recovery took a while.. lots of physical therapy. It took him over a year before he could put full weight on it again, but now he says it's stronger than his other knee

The scar is pretty darn big though, a good 8 inches and due to his weight, the wound stretched a little, so it's about 1/4 inch wide.

It really is up to you, recovery takes a while, but it could be worth it. It really depends on how bad it is now. He had no lateral stability, his knee would just bend sideways if he wasnt careful.

A year...... I may have to think about that.

What a crappy day!! I had a DR appt to get my scripts renewed. BUT I've had so much trouble with my right knee lately I'm walking with a cane. So I'll be getting a script for that. When I went to the DR 3 mo ago we bumped up my Arricept (dementia). The PA i saw said give it 3 mo and if no improvement we can bump it up again. So last night I was talking to DD Aimee about it and said " But I feel like I'm more on top of things don't you think so". "No" She said I was just like before and maybe a little advanced. I still don't remember putting the bread in the fridge.

So now, the PA has increased the Arricept and added another to it. I'll get them tomorrow. Got my Tetanus shot cause I keep cutting myself on wire and tin. And the pharmacist told me with my drug plan I can have them give me a Shingles shot for $6.40. Can't turn that down. With no ins it is over $250 or so. And lastly the PA is making me an appt with an orthopedic surgeon. I don't want knee replacement. At 220 lbs I don't think it would heal. She said that she has seen success with people bigger than me. But you know that sounds like ka-ching to me. What do y'all think?

I was close to 200 pounds when I had to have my hip replaced. Despite some complications from a previous illness that had nothing to do with the weight, I haven't regretted it for minute! Mine was done in 2002 which means it's well past the expected10 year life span of most hip replacements and I'm still glad I did it. The bonus? With the pain relieved, it was easier to get out and walk, which helped me lose some weight, which made the hip feel better, which made me get out and walk - well, you get the idea!

Hi All! It's been several days (a week or more!) since I visited the porch! I have a lot tocatch up on! Just stopped by to say hey! Hope everyone is doing great! Just read the last page. So excited for you Linda220, of you news to get to go to your DH! Sorry to hear about you health! Will pray for you! My oldest DD and I have put up 136 quarts of greenbeans in the last 2 weeks! NEVER have put up that much beans in the 40 years I've been canning!

And my DH just went out and picked 36 dozen ears of corn. So tomorrow we will be putting corn in the freezer!

Unbelievable I can't even imagine it. Good for you

Same thing for me I snapped the ACL ligament in my left knee falling off the mounting block steps as I was getting on my horse. I was about 320 at the time and when they talked about repair surgery I was skeptical. I talked to the Ortho surgeon and he said Naw I have patched up football players bigger n you and they were out playing football in three months.

The deal is when you have a knee replacement the Pain goes away from the inside.... You still have to heal from the surgery but I have talked to people who have gone dancing meerly weeks after the replacement.

I played 4 years of college softball. Two a day practices… double headers… never got injured (minus pulled quads sometimes). Rec league softball and I try to make an ESPN worthy play and slipped… yup you heard it… slipped on wet grass. Thought I just hyper extended it. Gave it a few minutes, jogged. All was fine. Tried to swing a bat and it got all sloppy. No swelling. No pain after the fact. I even saw an orthopedic PA three days after and he agreed it was hyperextended. Ice, rest, don't run until you can walk normally. Softball season shows up again and I try to run…YaaOUCH!!! No stability. Went back and requested a different Dr and it took him two seconds to tell me it was torn. MRI confirmed the ACL was gone gone gone. In fact, they almost suspected it was injured a long time ago. Odd… I never had a problem. Anyhow, I played that season… first base. I hit the ball, got to first and got a courtesy runner. Just had surgery (my first ever) in December. They used a graft from my hamstring tendon instead of the old patellar tendon method. I had NO pain after. Stiffness, yes, but pain worthy of even taking tylenol? Nope. No brace after surgery. I was walking without crutches in a week. I wish I would have had the surgery sooner!!! All clear now to do whatever I want. I protect it, but that is because I went over a year before getting it fixed.

My DH tore his ACL playing college Football. He had the surgery almost immediately. He had the patellar tendon graft (which, I was told, is common for men and those who play contact sports as there is a bigger graft to work with). He was in A LOT of pain. He spent the night in the hospital. It also didn't help that his knee brace was put on backwards after surgery and stayed that way for a week. He was dreading my surgery big time, which was another reason for putting it off until he had time off of work to help around the house and take care of the boys. I was up after two days helping my son get ready for school. Amazing how things change over time.

My sister also tore hers back in high school. A basketball star, she opted for the cadaver's hamstring option for quick recovery for her senior year. She was back to 100% at 3-4 months. That was too fast, honestly. About ten years after the surgery she squatted down and stretched it. A year later she went through multiple surgeries to clean and prime and finally redo the ACL using her patellar tendon.

Needless to say, I knew about all there was to know about the surgery. It made my decision on what method to use quite easy! The thing is… they get more and more advanced each day. I will never put something like this off again!

yep thats the ligament they used from the front of the same leg. They sent me home with one of those machines that bends your leg up and down all night long. It hurt but felt good all at the same time.

A Good friend of mine married a Rodeo Cowboy... Rough stock rider specifically Saddle broncs. He also was a house painter in the off season... One day he was coming down from a ladder and his knee gave out. It was always doing that on him and he had compensated for many years. WELL this was on the Job so they sent him to the Emergency because his leg was just hanging.

When they opened his knee up it kind of fell apart. about the only thing that was holding it together was extreme muscle overcompensation. Who knows how long he had lived that way with it. And they were able to fix him up... He was back painting houses and riding saddle broncs.

Funny thing is you think of Rodeo Cowboys being rough with horses... He was an excellent kind rider and very good with young horses training the stupid out of them...

Linda, my DH had to have the ligament reattached in his knee after he fell and his body went one way and his leg went the other. And he was on crutches and back at work the next day and drove himself.

OK, just pulled this out of my garden.

Baby Boc Choy that volunteered from last year.
I grew some for the neighbor and had a couple of them bolt and go to seed. I have never used boc choy in cooking, only the ordinary green cabbage. I assume I use the entire plant, stems leaves and all, right?

Any good recipes to offer? I have about 8 of them to use pretty soon before they bolt.
Any way to harvest and store for a couple of weeks?

wow thats pretty big... Slice em up and stir fry... Or toss with salad greens. I have had coleslaw made with it. with a very light vinegarette...

Those leaves probably would be good for cabbage rolls. Boc Choy is very much milder than regular cabbage and more tender so it cooks quickly.

Happy experimenting.

Oh jeez, I was just sitting here thinking that I need to put off any surgery for about 3 monthe. I got 2 sets of birds (eggs) coming within 2 wks.
