I just lost Pearl. She's been sounding funny for a few days....kind of like a squeaky toy when she'd try to cackle. She would also make the same sound but more quietly when she breathed. The consensus was that she'd ingested too many grass clippings when we dumped them in the run and had something stuck. Gave her some bread and by golly, for the last four days she sounded fine. She never did act sick - she ate, pooped explored and laid eggs regularly even while sounding squeaky.

I went out this morning and she was back to sounding funny again. I checked her throat again - still didn't feel anything weird. Nose wasn't runny, chest wasn't raspy. So I finished my chores, tossed another broken up hot dog bun in the run and came in. Ken went out to start draining the swamper and came back in to tell me that she was gone. It was lesss than 10 minutes from when I was checking her. This really sucks! She was friendly, gorgeous and gave such nice blue eggs. None of the other girls are acting or sounding strange.

Yeah, I know it happens and I count myself blessed that out of all of the chickens we have we've only lost this one. Compared to some I've had it pretty easy! So things could always have been much, much worse. like my friend who lost her entire flock to a blood-thirsty stray dog just before they started laying. Thanks, guys!
