The Front Porch Swing

Here is another gem from the house that we bought.
A flour bin.

The previous owner used it for either cat or dog food, so I just using it for holding the recycling for now because it stinks. It even has a bread recipe glued to the inside of it!

Love it.

Cabinets look a lot like mine.. only not coated in umpteen layers of peeling paint

OK I am making my first leg of lamb... a small one only four pounds

I have never made leg of lamb before... Lamb chops yes but a leg NO.

I got a recipe for time and temperature... but read sooo many of them I forgot what herbage so I bought what I thought might work.... I saw dad make lamb once and he poked garlic slivers into the meat.

So I took a whole head of garlic and peeled every clove bigger than my pinky nail.

I rinsed the lamb cut little slits in it and shoved garlic cut in half lengthwise all over the meat on Both sides....

I cut up carrots and onions in chunks....

Then i did a heavy salt and pepper on the meat and seared it in olive oil till it was brown.

Dumped in the carrots and onions and spread them around the meat.

I had sage so I cut up a handfull and sprinkled that over the veggies....

Then I had two bags of Mushrooms so I thought what the heck and dumped those in ontop and around.

I filled the BIG Fried chicken pan with a quarter box of beef broth and about a half box of Turkey stock... What I had on hand. The idea was to bring the moisture up about half way on the leg....

OOooh Dang I forgot the rosemary.... I will put that in when i check it half way7 through.

I have mint for toppings and mint jelley.

I was amidst all this and when grandma came in she asked me what I was fixing....

Leg of lamb....

What followed was a gawd aweful sound of someone Wretching.... Apparently she doesnt like MUTTON. I said no its not mutton its Lamb.... "Ok Then Baby Mutton.... bleakch"

She probably DOESN'T like mutton. My step-father wouldn't touch lamb. He ate too much mutton without choice when he was in the 101st Airborne during WWII. It wasn't lamb, it was mutton. Old, tough and "fully flavored". Even good lamb had enough "reminder" smell to put him off.

Lamb is my FAVORITE. And a leg doesn't need to (and IMO absolutely shouldn't) be cooked with a lot of stuff like a pot roast. Roast it like you would any good beef roast, no liquid, no veggies in the pan. Maybe some garlic, it doesn't need anything else. And though I know there are those who feel exactly the opposite, mint jelly ruins the flavor of the meat. I expect for some it is a way to hide a flavor they don't care for much, the more jelly, the better.

Whew! I thought he was MIIA (missing in in-action!) Welcome to the Porch, Mrshaggie! I'm Blooie, the resident whiner!

You might find a turtle at Jen's in Wisconsin ... as of last Wednesday.

I love corned beef! Unfortunately, like many things, I'm the only one in the house who does.

Same here. Even a small corned beef goes a long way with only 1 person to eat it so it pretty much doesn't happen. Same with lamb unfortunately. My wife will eat lamb but she doesn't appreciate it. Lamb is too expensive for just barely better than "won't eat it".

I buy a leg of lamb at easter when it is not-so expensive. It is too much for just the tow of us so I cut it up and freeze it in 1/2 pound packages. I season it like with oregano/garlic/salt/pepper, let it sit for the day and then fry it up in a pan with some sliced onions, and mushrooms. Serve on a pita bread with sour cream sauce, fresh tomato, diced cucumber, shredded cheese (I don't like feta) and wha-laa, Gyros for supper. Never had just leg of lamb roasted in the oven...

LOL... Try Tziki sauce Greek yogurt or yogurt that has been drained of excess liquid. Shredded cucumber and shredded garlic (to taste).

I am not a feta fan either. but I do like the milder forms... but only a little bit. I can certainly live without it.

Right now lamb is cheaper than beef in the stores.

I can eat feta straight from the package

Never had lamb knowingly (although I've had shawarma and gyros.. but you never know what you're eating). I probably would like it though.

If I had my choice Id go with Shawarma... OMG. The gal that had the restaurant I used to go to made her own. she used chicken breast.... pounded flat seasoned with Middle eastern herbs then skewered on then a big slice of onion then a chicken breast... onion .... breast ... onion... on and on till it covered the skewer... then roasted till the outside is crispy and yummy Cooked bits sliced off and served up.... and roasted some more.... that little bit of onion was divine

for some reason neither DH nor I like yogurt in the Tzatziki sauce and DH doesn't like the cucumber, so I just make it with the seasonings and sour cream, then put diced cucumber on my sandwich.
