The Front Porch Swing

How long do I cook pullet eggs for hard boiled?
My problem with the bring to a boil, cover and let set is that my cookware will seal itself tight if I put a lid on a hot pot. My friend had that same set and she actually had a lid crush as the pot cooled...

I use a plate.... Corel... all my pot lids nave a vent hole... so if you dont have a plate you could put something under the lid rim some cloth would work...

@perchie.girl you always have the best solutions! Of course, use a plate - why didn't I think of that.
I just boiled 8 eggs, pulled 3 for soft boiled but I was about a minute late. Ate them anyway and they were tasty! Had to try a fourth one just to make sure that I had them boiled right. Those little eggs do cook fast!

I started doing that when I learned how to cook omelets... ancient teflon pans had no lids... toss plate on to finish setting the egg and melting the cheese... I turn the fire off there too. There is enough carry over heat to finsih it off.

All these how to boil your egg posts are making me sad because our ducks have slowed down on egg laying. Funny how you go from more eggs then you can eat to no eggs!

How are you all doing on the porch? We have still been busy with the end of soccer season and halloween sneaking up on us! We carved the pumpkins yesterday.

My two had to have dinosaurs on them. Not an easy task and anything that can be considered remotely crafty, I'm just horrible at, so of course my son wants dinosaurs on a pumpkin

For his pumpkin, my son wanted a scary face. He was very detailed about what it had to look like. I kid you not, I had to draw the face out on paper first so he could sit and explain how it had to look. It doesn't look complicated in the picture, but this was a process... trust me!

We are very excited for Halloween now. Gabe is going to be a pterosaur again this year, so he will wear the same costume from last year. I told him he can't wear the costume to school because the beak we made from cardboard and I can imagine the meltdown if it gets broken, so he is choosing a costume from our costume chest to wear to school.

One final picture of the pumpkins on the porch.

We are expecting to have around 800 trick or treaters this year with halloween being on a Saturday. Usually we get around 500. We live in one of the only neighborhoods with sidewalks and street lights and its a big ordeal. Some neighbors have projectors with movies playing, some hand out hot chocolate, so it's a lot of fun. When we get home from trick or treating, we don't even close the front door, we just sit on the porch and my son loves "helping" all the kids choose something from the bowl. We don't do candy. This year we have some cool spider, bat and skeleton rings, pencils, erasers and halloween toys and stickers. My son keeps wanting stuff, so I had to hide the bowl in the laundry room. So I can't wait for it to all be gone saturday! Haha

I don't bother to cover the pot. I just let it come to a boil and turn the stove off. If I can put my hand in to pick up the eggs, they are done

Then I pour off the water and add cold so the eggs stop cooking. It doesn't seem to matter if the eggs are XL or small. Never gotten a blue/green yolk with this method.

Cute pumpkins, both the ones with carved smiles and the ones with the real warm smiles! We don't get trick-or-treaters here. It was the one thing that really threw me off when we moved here. I bought a ton of candy and maybe saw 4 kids. I figured it was because we were new and were on the "trailer park" end of town. But it's been like that every year. The kids get dressed up, but there's always a huge Halloween Bash at the Log Gym and that's where they get treats, prizes, and get to show off their costumes. Works for me, now that I'm used to it.

All about the "safety" thing I guess Blooie. No more door to door, just in case. Life was more fun when we were kids

Um, but Bruce, like I said it was this way when we moved here - and that was almost 20 years ago! How dangerous could a town of 450 people be 20 years ago?

Now, of course, we're up into the 600s so way more people here than when we came.

True. Maybe it is just the community spirit! A event when "everyone" can get together. Good time to see folks you don't run into elsewhere.

Off topic (but since this is "the porch" there is no specific topic):
I see you posted you were using hair ties as leg bands. Did that work out long term? Having trouble telling the 2 BJGs apart and when they and the BAs are all in "laying red", I don't think it will be easy to tell at all. They are already as big as Echo and might get as big or bigger than Zorra. Will have the same problem when Angel catches up to Yuki (the WRs) comb and wattles wise. Thought I would get the plastic leg bands until I saw your post. They seem like they would be more "leg friendly" and DD1 already has some in 3 sizes and various colors, we will skip red per your comments.
