The Fuzzy-Butt Thundering herd of Wisco

Today I went school shopping the whole day. It reminded me that school is just about to start and my summer is almost over. The end of summer/ start of school depression is hitting me fullll blasssst.
I did not see the Fuzzy-Butt Thundering herd Of wisco all dayy. I missed them. When we got home it was almost dark. I thought that the birds would roost in their newer home, but nooo. Apparently, they still remember the place where they grew up, and they are not letting it go without a fight. I ran fast to the "grainery" because I feared what my birds would do to the golf ball sized fuzz ball cornish cross chicks. I ran into the old coop, and the first thing I saw was a lone cornish chick in the middle of the floor. I thought it was dead. I poked it. It screamed and ran away. I then realized that the heat lamp was off. I peeked into the little chick pen. There was a bunch of chicks in one corner, another bunch in the opposite corner. They must have been freezing! Poor babies. I dont know how the heat lamp turned off while we were gone, but we turned it back on ASAP. Then I heard peeping from one corner, and I turned to see another bunch of chicks out of the chick pen! I got them all in. I have no idea how they got out of the brooder. They all survived though.
Now what about MY 7 babies? I didnt think they were in the coop, so i turned to go look outside when I heard a "buuuuck bok-bok buuuuuck" I turned to see two large shapes on the shelf. There they were, roosting in their original roost. I took them back into their new home, two by two. Looks like they will be stuck in the "ark" tommarow too. I dont know how to get it in their heads that they dont live in the old coop any more.

70 replies! Yay! Most of them are from me, but still, its more than I expected.

Ok, down to business.
Our cornish Xs are three days old now. They are already cronish x like. They sleep. They eat. They drink. They poop. They are just little adults.
Anyhoo, we have kinda bad news. One of them has a bad leg. This has happened before. Last year it happened. I put the hurt one seperate from the others, because she wasnt getting any food and she was so small. This year, I have decided to do the same thing. Now my little patient has her very own heat lamp, food, and water, in a little pen away from the others. I put another chick in there because she got lonely. Now we have another problem. The hurt one is not eating, drinking, or pooping (as far as I know?)
And all she does is sleep. Standing up. Youd think with that hurt leg she would sit down but nooooo. I have no iea what is wrong with her. The other chick is fine. My bro named her Shelly.

As for my wonderful fuzzy-butts, they spent the day in their little ark. At the end of the day, my sympathy won, so I let them outdoors. They roamed for a bit, then tried to get to the old coop. I herded them back in. Silly birds.
Roo tried to mount domonique again. Just when I think hes better he does something like that. I think his hormones are all out of whack...

I am amazed that I thought of this! I was sitting watching them in their run, and Roo came and stood in the doorway. He surveyed the run like this was his neighborhood. And then it came to me, a great name for my new coop...

MR. ROO-GERS NEIGHBORHOOD!!!

I may stencil it on to the back door. What think you?

Just as we thought roo would get better, he went and ruined his weak rep. again! When we got home i was sitting on the back porch and my dad and brother were playing catch and my mom was at the grill (yes, my mother can grill!) and the birds were by the raspberry patch. All of the sudden, Roo attacked Big Girl and tried to mount her! She screamed and ran away but he wouldnt stop. I became full of anger that he was hurting my baby girl! I hopped off the porch, ran across the lawn, took off my flip flop and chucked it at him. I nailed him in the back and he ran away screaming. I was still very mad, so I hurled my second shoe at him. But I missed and hit poor red. He has got to get his act together

Ok, so I have quite big news. My parents swore that yesterday morning they heard the unmistakable first crow of a rooster. However, I have heard nothing. Today was my first day of school. I woke up at 6:30 and I think I woke up my birds too early. I watched them slep through the window. Have you ever watched chickens sleep? It is one of the greatest things I have ever seen. They are super cute.
Anyhoo, we have new renters renting the rental house. Unfourtunately for the Fuzzy-Butt Thundering herd of Wisco, they have two collies of some sort. They are actually getting along ok with Rex the Border collie. The two guys renting it said that the dogs would be fine around my chickens, but I am taking no chances. Till Sunday, my babies are stuck in their little run, and I am sure they will go crazy.

Hi AJ, I am really enjoying your little stories!

I have 5 chickens and 4 ducks and could watch their antics all day!

Sounds like your roo is growing up fast! I also like Domonique for a name.

I remember when I was about your age I got a kitten for my birthday. We all called her Kitty until we could think of a good name, but by the time we did, the name Kitty had already stuck and we just thought of her as that name! So she was Kitty until she died 18 years later. I suspect that the same might happen with Domonique!!

I look forward to the next instalment of your little saga....

2nd day of school was the better of the two. But still, I came home tired and cranky. I picked up my darling big girl and she laid her head on my shoulder and slept and made a happy noise. I was so happy all my bitterness just washed away. She is the sweetest and calmest of all my EEs. I love my chickens

Aaaaahhh, sorry to see the disappointing response you got to your thread about showing Domonique. I don't know anything about breeds or showing, but I'm sure Domonique knows you love her, and you don't need any county show judge to tell you she is beautiful.

I thought about taking one of my birds to the county fair this year, just for fun and for the experience really, but they were in moult when the fair came around so really not looking their best! Anyway, I did wonder if it was for the best in the end, as I am not sure they would really have enjoyed being caged and taken somewhere strange with lots of people and it was very hot at the time. They also could bring home some germs from other birds too, so when the day of the fair came (I didn't even go myself after all) I looked at them running around the garden being just their happy chicken selves and thought to myself that they probably had a much better day than if I had been able to take them! That made me happy for them, more than any rosettes could have done

I'm not trying to put you off, just telling you my experience. If you do take her, then I wish you the best of luck. Anyway, I think she is very pretty, which I am sure you do too, regardless of whether she might win you a rosette
