Thank you so much. He works about 60 hours/week, so weekends are about all we have together to get larger projects done. We're both artistic and handy with tools, so we have ALL KINDS of things planned this summer!

I'm hoping the chickens and garden will provide another bonding experience for me and my sons as well. I have a 12, 9, and 2.5 year old boys that have never lived in the country until now, and I hope this experience as a whole will teach them even more about self-accountability, being responsible, and give them a way to make a little money at Farmers Markets over the end of the summer!

Oh, what a wonderful time you're going to have introducing your children to working with "Mother Earth"! I always gardened with my now grown children but just got chickens last year. My most memorable moment with chickens was introducing my 5 year old granddaughter to them. She was thrilled! I always make sure there's an egg in the nesting box for her to get. When she fetched the first one, she looked up at me and said "Mamaw's, every day is a little bit like Easter, isn't it?" Kids say the best things! She comes and stays at least a week with me in the summer and she's in the garden first thing in the morning, still in her nightgown, and eats whatever she picks. Not unusual for her to have eggs and cucumbers for breakfast!

Same here but we love in the city but have a huge lot so I'm introducing to an even more organic type of lifestyle. We are growing our own food as well.

I'm already looking forward to the girls laying eggs, and the boys running around collecting them and playing in the dirt with me. They're excited right now - we just planted our 1/2 acre garden. I think this lifestyle and appreciation for growing and raising your own food is truly a lost art - one I hope to rekindle with my own boys. Thank you so much!

Nice!! How big is that building? Was it delivered assembled?

The building is actually from Old Hickory Buildings (you can buy outright or rent-to-own, we bought outright), and comes fully-assembled on a rather cool, highly-technical trailer that allows one delivery driver to set it exactly where you want it. Ours is the 8'x12' lofted barn model with two windows. We're going to make two extra longer and narrower top windows for the sides and cover them with 1/2" hardware cloth, and use the siding we cut out to make hinged "shutters" that can be latched open for added ventilation in the summer. With just the two windows open, it gets a little stuffy in there - so I want the girls to have plenty of air circulating, plus the added availability to open windows on the east and west sides as well as the two already on the north side. I figure that will be a way to keep air circulating in there during winter - I can just open/shut the windows according to wind direction so they're not getting pummeled by frosty, wet winds.
