The grandious expectations of Chickens in your backyard

To Brahma 5000 -A 4 year old cornish cross would be extremely rare. People set themselves up for failure when they start thinking that this can be done routinely. Really, even thinking about your chickens as children is setting you up for too much grief. For your own mental health, you might want to consider a different type of pet.

Here here! Well said OP.
When you first said you lost your teenagers I seriously thought you meant your human kids. Glad that's not the case, but I understand if your chickens were like your kids!
Sorry about your chickens. We have gotten birds without quarantine, they didn't get sick I don't think, but won't be doing that again. We are currently coming up with a plan to give our remaining chooks a clean bill of health in preparation for new babies coming in the summer! Will be Our first time with hatchery day olds.

I know that a Cornish cross won’t kive that long, but I can give it a chance to live as a normal chicken.

Well, I think you did with Elenor, so why the intense sadness? You gave it your best shot, she had a good life, and the death is a reality. They really are not a normal chicken, they are created to be a meat chicken, one that is harvested quickly. One cannot change that, but you have the right to take it on if you want, but you are nearly certainly setting yourself up for more intense grief. I myself, choose to have chickens for the pleasure of the flock. Each to their own way of doing things.

Best wishes

I got really attached to her when I was nursing her back to health. Thank you for your comforting words. I know that Cornish crosses aren’t meant to live a normal life, but if I can make a difference for even one of them and show them human compassion and give them a normal chicken life then it will all be worth it to me, no matter how long I have them for.
